Marlon Wayans has revealed that a heartfelt promise made to his late father, Howell Wayans, has inspired the family’s return to the Scary Movie franchise, marking their first involvement since 2001. Marlon shared his reflections during an interview with Variety, emphasising the emotional weight of their family bond and their commitment to continue a legacy.

Howell Wayans passed away in 2023 at the age of 86, after spending several weeks in hospital amid the COVID-19 pandemic. In one of their last interactions, Howell urged Marlon and his brothers to collaborate once more. “I think you and your brothers should work together again,” Howell expressed, a sentiment that resonated deeply with Marlon.

Describing how challenging it can be for siblings to reunite creatively, Marlon, the youngest of ten siblings, remarked with humour, “It’s hard for four Black men to stay together.” He compared their dynamic to that of New Edition, jokingly referring to his brothers as “four Bobby Browns,” alluding to the band member’s reputed difficulties in maintaining harmony.

Despite the complexities of coordinating projects, Howell’s insistence on their familial connection remained strong. He encouraged them by saying, “You guys make magic together,” and his parting wish lingered with Marlon: “Do it for me.” In that poignant moment, Marlon vowed to honour his father’s desire, shaking his hand and promising to make their return to the franchise a reality.
This commitment has culminated in the upcoming Scary Movie reboot, set to be released in cinemas on 5 June. The film is directed by Michael Tiddes and features a creative team that includes Marlon along with his brothers, Keenen Ivory Wayans and Shawn Wayans, as well as their nephew Craig Wayans and longtime collaborator Rick Alvarez. This installment will be their first since the release of Scary Movie 2, which came out more than two decades ago.
Reflecting on the past, Marlon recounted how he and his brothers felt excluded from the franchise after initially demanding fair compensation for their work on the third film following the success of the first two. He claims that their concepts were effectively appropriated without their involvement and that an announcement about Scary Movie 3 was made without their consent. “The franchise was stripped from us,” he said, highlighting the painful experience of feeling sidelined while simply seeking what he perceived as fair recognition.
In a significant development, the franchise was revived when Jonathan Glickman became CEO of Miramax in 2024 and reached out to Marlon. The actor recognised the essential need for his brothers to be included in the revival of the franchise they originally created. “This is a return back to the franchise we all created, so forget all the bad years!” he stated. He affirmed that, rather than being a continuation, this project represents something new with an emphasis on fresh ideas.
In addition to discussing his film career, Marlon opened up about the toll that the pandemic took on him personally. He shared that he had lost 62 loved ones during this period, which included both of his parents. “My world crumbled,” he reflected on the profound impact of these losses, showcasing a side of him beyond the screen.
Marlon also spoke about his experience supporting his transgender son, Kai, which he described as illuminating the idea of true, unconditional love. He emphasised the importance of his children’s happiness, stating, “At the end of the day, are my children happy? And if they’re happy, then I’m happy for them.” He expressed his unwavering commitment to protect and honour his children, ensuring that they feel supported in their identities.
As anticipation builds for the Scary Movie reboot, audiences can look forward to a blend of nostalgia and fresh creativity from the Wayans family. The film aims to recapture the essence of the original while aligning with the evolving creative visions of its talented contributors. The journey from a heartfelt promise to a family reunion in film encapsulates themes of love, legacy, and resilience in the face of adversity. Scary Movie is set to hit theatres nationwide this June, promising to bring laughter and nostalgia to fans old and new.
