A Southern Californian community is in mourning following a tragic incident that resulted in the death of a mother and serious injuries to her teenage daughter. April Clements, 42, died this week after being struck by a speeding driver in Hawthorne, an area located just south of Los Angeles. Her 17-year-old daughter, Jada, was critically injured in the accident and is currently recovering in hospital.

The collision occurred on Sunday, May 17, at approximately 11:49 AM local time. According to local authorities, a pickup truck ran a red light at the intersection of Imperial Highway and Inglewood Avenue, colliding with several other vehicles. Witnesses reported that the driver was speeding at an alarming rate, with one bystander claiming the truck was travelling at “80 miles an hour or more” without attempting to stop or swerve.

Family and friends have identified the victims as Clements and her daughter, Jada. At the time of the incident, Jada was semi-conscious when firefighters from the Los Angeles County Fire Department extricated her from the wreckage. Donna Robinson, a family friend, confirmed that Jada was unaware of her mother’s passing when she was transported to the hospital. She has since been placed in a medically induced coma following spinal surgery.

In the wake of this devastating news, communities have come together to support Jada as she begins her recovery journey. According to the organiser of a GoFundMe page dedicated to the family, Jada’s condition is stabilising, and she is gradually regaining consciousness after surgery. “Jada’s dad is holding it together,” the fundraiser reads. “We’re just really trying to get Jada through these next few surgeries.”
Friends have described April Clements as a dedicated mother who worked multiple jobs to provide for her daughter and was a vibrant member of the community known for her warmth and kindness. A statement on the fundraising page highlighted her “kind heart, beautiful spirit, energy, and unconditional love for her family and friends.” It continued, “Her sudden passing has left an unimaginable void in our hearts and in the lives of all who knew her.”
In remembrance of April, community members held a candlelight vigil at the site of the tragic incident earlier this week. Clarita Pollard, a neighbour, recounted their plans for a barbecue that day, saying, “I got some hot wings, but [April] didn’t come back through the door, and she’s not coming back. That’s hard.” Spencer Davis, a close friend of April’s, expressed the overwhelming nature of the loss, stating, “It’s just very shocking that this happened to a very good friend of mine and her daughter.”
Expressions of grief have been accompanied by calls for justice, as many in the community are advocating for the driver of the pickup truck to face criminal charges for their actions. Davis emphasised the importance of safe driving, stating, “If you’re going so fast, things like this can happen and then your life is over.”
The tragic accident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by reckless driving. As the investigation into the crash continues, the community remains united in its support for Jada and her family, hoping that through their collective efforts, she will pull through this critical time.
In the face of such loss, they cling to the memory of April Clements, a woman whose spirit touched all who knew her. “We need to be there for Jada,” Davis added, highlighting the commitment of family and friends to rally around the young girl during this difficult period. With the support of the community, there is hope that Jada will emerge from this dark chapter and heal from both her physical injuries and the emotional toll of losing her mother.
