Lupita Nyong’o is set to take on the dual roles of Helen of Troy and Clytemnestra in Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film adaptation of Homer’s epic, The Odyssey, scheduled for release on 17 July 2025. The casting decision, however, has not been without its controversies, drawing criticism on social media, including comments from high-profile figures like Elon Musk. In a recent interview with Elle magazine, Nyong’o addressed these racially charged critiques, emphasising her stance on the matter.

Nyong’o, who won an Academy Award for her performance in 12 Years a Slave, remarked, “The criticism will exist whether I engage with it or not,” adding her focus remains on the storytelling rather than defending her casting. The actress highlighted that the narrative at hand is mythological, stating, “This is a mythological story,” and expressed her full support for Nolan’s vision.
The Odyssey, one of the oldest narratives in Western literature, follows Odysseus, portrayed by Matt Damon, as he navigates the challenges of returning home after the Trojan War. Nyong’o argued that the film’s cast reflects a more global representation, saying, “Our cast is representative of the world,” underlining the modern interpretation of such an ancient tale.
In her interview, Nyong’o elaborated on the essence of the story, noting its grand scope: “It spans worlds. So that’s why the cast is what it is. We’re occupying the epic narrative of our time.” Her comments come as Elle magazine features Nyong’o, alongside co-stars such as Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, and Charlize Theron, on separate covers for their Summer 2026 ‘Epic Issue’.
