Ragan’s tumultuous journey began during a routine anatomy scan at 24 weeks of pregnancy, where doctors discovered her child had a cleft lip. The unexpected diagnosis left Ragan, then just 19, reeling. Reflecting on that moment, she said, “When I say my heart dropped so far, I’m not lying.” Initially, she believed this singular diagnosis would pose the greatest challenge during her pregnancy.
However, the surprises were not over. Shortly after her daughter’s birth, the family learned she also had Goldenhar syndrome—a rare congenital disorder affecting facial structure—along with microtia, a condition where the outer ear is either undeveloped or completely absent, and microglossia, which is a very uncommon condition characterised by an abnormally small tongue. Ragan revealed that only around 50 documented cases of microglossia have been reported since 1718.

The pregnancy itself was fraught with anxiety; beforehand, Ragan had learned of a partial uterine septum, an anomaly in the shape of the uterus, which compounded her worries. Like many expectant mothers, she turned to the internet for information, but found herself overwhelmed by troubling narratives related to miscarriage. Fortunately, healthcare professionals provided reassurances about her diagnosis, allowing her to find some comfort as she adjusted to impending motherhood.

After discovering the cleft lip diagnosis, Ragan faced an emotionally charged rest of the day, feeling alone as she processed the implications of what lay ahead. It was during this period of uncertainty that she began her quest to understand what it meant to raise a child with special needs. She reflected, “I wish I could tell parents going through the same thing that it’s okay to feel all the emotions you need to feel.”
Leah finally gave birth at 37 weeks after enduring a challenging labour experience. The moment of arrival was bittersweet; doctors promptly took her newborn for medical attention, leading Ragan to hold her breath until she heard her baby’s first cry. When she was eventually able to cradle her daughter, she noticed a notable absence beneath the hospital cap—her child had a severely underdeveloped ear.
As time progressed, Ragan and her family were introduced to a series of medical specialists, therapies, and operations that reshaped their lives. The significance of the diagnoses meant that their daily routines revolved around surgeries and medical appointments. Her daughter, now reliant on a feeding tube for nourishment and bone-anchored hearing aids for sound, continued to adapt and grow.
Despite the initial anxiety that loomed over her during pregnancy, Ragan expressed that many of her fears began to dissipate as she witnessed her daughter making remarkable strides. “At the beginning of our journey, I was terrified of mental disabilities or even quality of life,” she admitted. “But all those fears have gone away. She has hit almost every single milestone, and I’m enjoying the life of being a mother of a beautiful and wonderful girl.”
Sharing her experience on TikTok has provided Ragan with a platform to connect with a broader community of parents facing similar challenges. Hearing from families globally who are navigating the complexities of diagnoses like microtia and Goldenhar syndrome has reinforced her commitment to advocate for her daughter.
“It’s been incredibly hard for me to open up and share our story,” Ragan acknowledged, “but this experience has really opened me up to stand up and be her voice.” In embracing her role, she encourages others to confront their fears while honouring the emotional complexities of raising a child with medical needs.
This story not only highlights Leah Ragan’s journey but serves as a reminder of the strength and resilience that many parents embody in the face of unexpected challenges. The love she harbours for her daughter shines through, fostering hope that others may find comfort and inspiration in their own experiences.
