Jessie Trondeau has embraced a lifestyle that many could only dream of: living aboard a cruise ship. For half the year, the Pennsylvanian and her family call a floating vessel their home, where her husband, Krasimir, works as a crew member.
Jessie’s approach to family life combines adventure and education, as she homeschools their two children, aged six and four, while navigating the vast oceans. She shares this unconventional lifestyle with others through her Instagram handle, “thesailingwife1.”
Speaking about their unique living situation, Jessie expresses that it provides an exceptional opportunity for her children to bond with their father while travelling the world. “I definitely want my kids to have as much of their father in their life as possible,” Jessie explains. “Being on board with him is one of the best opportunities for us to be together as a family while also discovering various corners of the globe.”
Jessie and Krasimir’s life at sea began when their daughter was just a few months old, and Jessie notes that their children perceive this lifestyle as entirely normal. “Sometimes people will ask them if they like living on the ship, and they just say, ‘Yeah, don’t you?’ They don’t see it as strange at all,” she shares. To them, this cruise ship is akin to any family home.
The couple first crossed paths while working onboard ships. Jessie spent seven years in the art galleries of numerous cruise lines before settling into family life at sea. Referring to their experiences, she describes life aboard as brimming with joy and adventure. Last year, the family spent several months exploring Asia, which Jessie recalls as a profound experience for everyone, especially Krasimir, who had never been to that part of the world before.
Daily life proceeds with a familiar routine for the family. Mornings consist of breakfast, followed by two to three hours of educational activities for the children. After lunch, Jessie takes the kids to the Adventure Ocean kids’ club, allowing them to engage with other children while providing her with some downtime. “That’s my time to myself,” she notes, adding that she enjoys moments in an adults-only area of the ship, the solarium, while the kids are entertained.
In the afternoons, the family often goes to the pool and enjoys dinner together, followed by nightly shows. Jessie highlights the excitement of port days, during which they get to explore diverse and new destinations as a family.
Although life at sea does come with its perks, Jessie acknowledges some challenges as well. “I get seasick, but I’m the only one in my family who does,” she laughs, a light-hearted reflection on the realities of their maritime adventures. Furthermore, despite the vast array of food options readily available on the ship, she occasionally yearns for the comforts of home cooking. “Most people think that never having to cook is a huge benefit,” she admits, “but now and then, I really miss being in my kitchen and preparing meals.”

The constant questions from acquaintances inspired her to document their experiences on Instagram. “People often ask if we get bored or if I feel sick,” she explains. Choosing to create a visual representation of their life has become a way for her to showcase the joys and realities of life aboard a cruise ship.
