Boston Logan International Airport has announced an innovative pilot programme aimed at enhancing the travel experience for passengers from the MetroWest region of Massachusetts. Starting from June 1, certain travellers will have the unique opportunity to clear security at a new remote terminal in Framingham before being transported directly to their gates at the airport. This new service, which carries a nominal fee of £9 each way, aims to ease congestion at the airport and reduce individual vehicle trips.

The remote terminal, located at 19 Flutie Pass along Route 9, will initially serve passengers flying with Delta Air Lines and JetBlue Airways between 5:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. Massport officials have expressed optimism about expanding the programme to include additional airlines in the future. The initiative is designed to cater specifically to passengers travelling from areas west of Boston and east of Worcester.

Passengers utilising the remote terminal will be able to check in, drop off their luggage, and go through security screening prior to boarding a secure bus that will transport them to Logan Airport. Daniel Blake, Vice President of Airport Experience at JetBlue Airways, highlighted the programme’s benefits, suggesting that travellers will enjoy a unique airport experience as they are dropped off ramp-side, just steps from the airplanes.
According to Samantha Decker, Assistant Director of Media Relations at Massport, the new system not only simplifies travel for passengers, whether for business or leisure, but also aims to alleviate traffic congestion on nearby roadways. Furthermore, by reducing the number of individual vehicle trips, the initiative contributes positively to environmental sustainability through lower emissions.
Reservations for the service are now available on Massport’s website. Upon entering their flight details, travellers will be directed to the most suitable bus service for their itinerary. Each bus, which will accommodate up to 55 passengers, is expected to arrive at Logan Airport at least 45 minutes before scheduled flight departures, with hourly departures from the remote terminal between 4 a.m. and 1 p.m. Children accompanying adults can use the service for free, making it a family-friendly option for those travelling to the airport.
In addition to passenger convenience, the remote terminal programme will feature 400 available parking spots, priced at £7 per day. The initiative is being managed in collaboration with The Landline Company, which has previously operated similar transport services between airports in Pennsylvania and Illinois. This pioneering service marks a significant first in the United States, offering direct transfers from a remote terminal to an airport.
Massport’s CEO, Rich Davey, emphasised the goal of the remote terminal programme as part of a larger vision to transform the passenger experience into a smoother, more connected journey. “Imagine arriving at the airport having already checked in and cleared security, and then being dropped off just steps from your gate,” he remarked, outlining the potential for a stress-free travel process.
Delta Air Lines’ Director of Sales (East), Charlie Schewe, praised the initiative as a progressive approach to improving travel for customers. “This forward-thinking programme is exactly the kind of innovation we want to be part of,” he stated, highlighting a commitment to seamless travel experiences for all passengers.
As Massport prepares to launch this first-of-its-kind programme, both airlines and airport authorities are eager to explore new avenues to enhance customer journeys. Blake mentioned the strategic importance of collaboration in this endeavour, stating, “We’re excited to try new ways to enhance our customers’ journey by thinking outside the box and collaborating with our airport partners.”
In conclusion, the introduction of the remote terminal service at Boston Logan International Airport represents a significant development in the travel landscape, promising to deliver improved convenience for passengers while contributing to wider sustainability efforts. As the pilot programme rolls out in June, it will be interesting to see how well it is received by the travelling public and if it will pave the way for similar initiatives across the country.
