William Wells, aged 35, was taken into custody on charges of felony battery against a person aged 65 years or older. The confrontation occurred on Saturday, 16 May, at approximately 2:31 PM while the officiant, who is 65, was packing his equipment into a vehicle at Toronita Park after performing a wedding.
According to a police report, Wells approached the officiant to inquire about the pricing of services for a wedding on the beach. Upon receiving a quote of $500, Wells reportedly became agitated and began exhibiting erratic behaviour. Witnesses described the situation quickly deteriorating into a heated exchange concerning the officiant’s charges.

Media reports have revealed that as the situation escalated, Wells began to hurl insults at the officiant, claiming he was rude and shouting at him loudly. The officiant, sensing that the situation could worsen, began recording the interaction on his phone. This action seemingly provoked Wells further, who attempted to bat away the officiant’s phone and ultimately punched him in the stomach.
The officiant sustained a blow that reportedly caused him to lose his breath temporarily. Fortunately, he declined medical assistance at the scene but expressed the desire to press charges against Wells, prompting the involvement of local law enforcement.

After the assault, Wells fled in a blue Kia, which police later traced back to him. Officers were able to locate him at his home in South Daytona, where he was arrested. In light of the circumstances and the victim’s age, authorities took the matter seriously, leading to charges of felony battery.
Following his arrest, Wells acknowledged that there had been a verbal clash and that he had swatted at the officiant’s phone. However, he refuted the claim that he had struck the officiant in the stomach.
Authorities also noted that Wells has a troubling history, with multiple prior convictions for battery, including various felony charges related to narcotics and eluding police. This pattern of behaviour may influence the legal proceedings moving forward.
The tension surrounding wedding planning is not uncommon, as financial strains and the emotional weight of such events can lead to disputes. This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of clear communication when hiring services, particularly for significant occasions like weddings.
As the legal process unfolds, many will be watching to see the outcome of this unusual confrontation. It raises vital questions about the need for professionals in the wedding industry to manage client expectations and handle conflicts with care to avoid such alarming scenarios.
