**Warning Issued as Casely Power Pods Recalled Following Fatal Incident**
Casely, the prominent phone charger manufacturer, has issued an urgent recall for over 429,000 of its Power Pods following disturbing reports of overheating, battery expansion, and even fires. This precaution comes after the tragic death of a 75-year-old woman whose power bank exploded while charging her phone, prompting officials to act decisively.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has reported that the recalled devices, specifically the Casely Power Pods with model number E33A, pose severe risks to consumers. The lithium-ion batteries in these power banks can overheat, leading to ignition and resulting in significant burn injuries or, in some cases, fatalities.
Initially recalled in April 2025 after multiple consumer complaints, the first announcement noted that 51 users had experienced issues with battery overheating, culminating in six minor burn injuries. Since that time, an additional 28 reports, and one fatal incident, have prompted a renewed warning from both Casely and the CPSC.
The incident involving the elderly woman occurred in New Jersey in August 2024. While she attempted to charge her cellphone, the power bank exploded in her lap, causing severe second- and third-degree burns. Unfortunately, she later succumbed to complications stemming from these injuries, illuminating the critical risks associated with this device.
The CPSC has also highlighted another incident from February 2024, where a 47-year-old woman experienced first-degree burns on an aircraft due to the explosion of her power bank. Such alarming reports have emphasised the need for immediate attention and action from consumers who possess the affected charger.
Casely Power Pods, which are designed as portable 5000mAh MagSafe wireless phone chargers, feature the distinctive model number E33A on the reverse side and carry the “Casely” engraving on the front. Retail prices ranged from £30 to £70, and these devices were available for purchase on various e-commerce platforms, including Amazon, between March 2022 and September 2024.
In a heartfelt statement, Casely expressed profound sorrow regarding the reported incidents. The company, now reannouncing the voluntary recall in collaboration with the CPSC, urged customers to cease usage of the affected model immediately. They also encouraged all users of the recalled devices to participate in the recall process to ensure their safety.
For consumers still in possession of the recalled Power Pods, Casely has established a system for obtaining free replacements and has provided related guidelines on its website. It is crucial that customers do not discard the recalled devices in regular waste or recycling bins, as the lithium-ion batteries require special disposal methods.
The CPSC has stressed that lithium-ion batteries carry a higher fire risk compared to standard batteries. The agency recommends that individuals reach out to their local household hazardous waste (HHW) collection centres to ascertain whether they accept these batteries for safe disposal. It is advisable for users to confirm with their municipality for the best guidance on proper disposal procedures.
