A recent study has revealed that over half of adolescents in the United States are sacrificing essential sleep due to excessive smartphone usage during the late-night hours. Conducted by a team including researchers from the University of California, San Francisco, and the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York, the findings were published in JAMA Pediatrics on May 18.

The research tracked the smartphone habits of 657 adolescents, with participants averaging 15 years of age. These individuals were part of the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study, recognised as the largest long-term investigation into brain development and child health in the US. The study’s lead investigator, Dr. Jason Nagata, noted that the included participants showed concerning patterns in their late-night phone use.

The researchers employed an app to passively monitor the participants’ screen interactions. Their findings indicated that teens engaged with their phones for more than 50 minutes on school nights between 10:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. Alarmingly, 52.1% of these adolescents were still using their devices during the critical hours of 12:00 a.m. and 4:00 a.m., a timeframe recognised as crucial for restorative sleep.
The primary activities during this late-night usage were social media engagement and video consumption. Popular platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube were frequently accessed, alongside streaming services like Netflix and Disney Plus. Some participants were also found playing video games, including titles such as Clash Royale and Roblox.
According to guidelines established by the Mayo Clinic, teenagers aged 13 to 18 should aim for between eight to ten hours of sleep each night to support their developing bodies and minds. Dr. Nagata expressed concerns that prolonged engagement with smartphones during night hours could hinder this necessary sleep, thereby affecting adolescents’ academic performance and overall well-being.
“Quality sleep is essential for adolescents as their bodies and brains are undergoing significant development,” Dr. Nagata stated in a press release. He further suggested effective strategies for parents to mitigate smartphone usage at night, which include enforcing screen-free times such as bedtime and establishing device-free zones like bedrooms.
He encouraged the creation of a family media plan that sets clear screen time guidelines tailored to children’s ages, the specific devices they use, and seasonal considerations. Notably, the summer period could serve as an opportune time to reassess these rules and cultivate healthier digital habits ahead of the academic year.
This research marks a departure from traditional studies that often relied on self-reported data, which can sometimes present inaccuracies. The use of passive tracking in this study provides a clearer insight into adolescents’ actual smartphone usage.
The study also builds on Dr. Nagata’s earlier work, which highlighted the significant time adolescents spend on smartphones during school hours, showing a need for a multidisciplinary approach to tackle the impact of technology on young people’s health.
In a statement regarding future research, the authors advocated for additional investigations that explore the relationship between specific smartphone usage patterns—such as app types and usage timings—and their implications for adolescent sleep, wellbeing, and academic performance.
This study serves as a critical reminder for parents, educators, and healthcare professionals about the influence of technology on children and teenagers. As the digital landscape continues to evolve, proactive measures to manage screen time will be imperative for fostering healthier lifestyles for the younger generation.
