The Danish Eurodance band Aqua, widely recognised for their catchy 1997 hit “Barbie Girl,” has announced their breakup, marking the end of an era for the iconic group. The news was revealed in a heartfelt social media post shared on Instagram, where the members expressed their gratitude for the nearly three decades they spent together as a band.

In their message, the group, comprising Søren Rasted, René Dif, Lene Nystrøm, and Claus Norreen, stated, “After many incredible years, we have decided to close the chapter of AQUA as a live band.” They reflected on the impact their music has had on their lives, remarking, “Together, we’ve had the chance to experience more than we ever dared to dream of.”
The announcement has left many fans reminiscing about the band’s remarkable journey, which began with the release of their debut album, “Aquarium.” This album not only featured “Barbie Girl,” but also introduced several other notable tracks, solidifying Aqua’s place in the Eurodance music scene.

The band shared their appreciation for the experiences they gained throughout their career, stating, “We’ve travelled the world countless times, met so many wonderful people, sung together with millions of you, and shared memories that we will carry with us forever.” Their emotional farewell highlights the bond they have developed over the years, both with each other and with their fanbase.

In reflecting on their decision, the group acknowledged the importance of recognising when it is time to part ways: “When you’ve been together for this long, you also learn when it’s time to protect what you’ve created together. For us, this feels like the right moment to say goodbye, while the memories are still strong.” Their sentiments offer a sense of closure and understanding, as they move on while holding onto the love for their music and their shared experiences.
Aqua also took a moment to thank their supporters, writing, “From the bottom of our hearts: thank you to everyone who has been part of this journey over the past 30 years. Thank you for the love, the energy, the support, and for all the moments we’ve shared together.” The message concluded with a note of positivity, with the band expressing “nothing but love and gratitude from here on” from all members.
The group is perhaps best known for “Barbie Girl,” a song that sparked controversy when Mattel, the company behind the Barbie brand, sued Aqua’s label over claims that the song commodified their iconic doll. However, the legal dispute was resolved in 2002 when a court ruled that the song was a work of parody.
Despite facing challenges, Aqua continued to have an impact on popular culture. In 2023, the band enjoyed a resurgence when Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice released a reimagined version of “Barbie Girl” for the promotional campaign of the latest Barbie film. This collaboration catapulted Aqua back into the spotlight, resulting in a top ten hit in the U.S., two Grammy nominations, a planned tour, and a performance at Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest in 2024.
Søren Rasted, the group’s keyboardist, expressed elation over their renewed success, calling the resurgence “out-of-this-world fantastic.” This renewed attention proved that “Barbie Girl” still resonates with audiences decades after its initial release, reminding many of the band’s contributions to pop music.
Despite their breakup, Aqua’s legacy endures, with countless fans treasuring the memories associated with their music. The decision to disband appears to reflect a mutual respect among the members, who wish to preserve the essence of their journey and the joy it brought to millions. As they close this chapter, their influence on the Eurodance genre and pop culture will undoubtedly remain.
