Sam Houston State’s head football coach, Phil Longo, shared his grief in a heartfelt statement released shortly after the news broke. “It is with heavy hearts that we mourn the loss of Will Davis,” he said. “He was a cherished member of our Bearkat football family. Will touched the lives of everyone around him with his positive outlook on life. His bright spirit will be profoundly missed.”

The circumstances surrounding Davis’ death remain unclear at this time. The incoming graduate senior from South Boston, Virginia, had joined the Sam Houston football programme just ahead of the spring practice, showing promise and enthusiasm for his new role after transferring from West Virginia University.
Before his move to Texas, Davis had an impressive season at Virginia Union University, a Division II Historically Black College and University (HBCU). During the 2024 season, he became a key part of the team’s defence, accumulating 56 tackles, two interceptions, and one sack, which earned him all-conference honours. Not only was he a formidable player on the field, but he also excelled academically, having completed his bachelor’s degree in entrepreneurial management.
In 2025, Davis briefly transferred to West Virginia where he participated in the season opener; however, he soon made the decision to switch to Sam Houston State, seeking new opportunities and challenges within the sport. His recent arrival had ignited excitement and hope among both his teammates and the coaching staff.
The sports community is now coming together to honour Davis and offer support to those affected by his passing. Sam Houston State’s Athletic Director, Bobby Williams, also expressed his sorrow, stating, “We lost a member of our Bearkat family this weekend, and everyone is in pain today. My heart aches for the family, friends, coaches, and teammates of William Davis. Losing someone so suddenly is never easy, especially when that individual is so young and had so much life ahead of them.”
Tributes have been pouring in for the young athlete, highlighting not only his talents on the pitch but the kind-hearted individual he was off it. Friends and colleagues reflected on Davis’s infectious positivity and enthusiasm, qualities that made him beloved among his peers.
The broader college sports community is responding to his passing with tributes that spotlight his achievements and the impact he had on those around him. Numerous messages of condolence have been shared via social media, with many describing him as a role model and a source of inspiration.
The tragic loss has amplified discussions about mental health and the need for support systems for students, particularly athletes who may be grappling with pressures both on and off the field. As tributes continue to be shared, there is a growing call for institutions to prioritise well-being to ensure that other students find the support they may need during difficult times.
William Davis’s life, though tragically cut short, will be remembered for the passion he displayed in both his sport and studies. His legacy lives on in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing him and through the many lives he touched during his journey as a student-athlete. As the Sam Houston State community gathers to grieve, they honour the memory of a young man who embodied hope and dedication, attributes that will continue to inspire many in the years to come.
