The acclaimed musical “The Book of Mormon” will temporarily halt performances following a significant fire incident at the Eugene O’Neill Theatre, which broke out on May 4. The production, which has been captivating audiences since its debut in 2011, has had to cancel shows through May 20 as repairs continue at the venue.

In a recent statement, producers alongside theatre owners ATG Entertainment confirmed that the theatre will remain closed while an extensive cleanup and repair process is underway due to the damage caused by the electrical fire. This fire, which was classified as a three-alarm blaze, originated in an electrical room situated between the fourth and fifth floors of the historic building.
Assistant Chief David Simms from the New York City Fire Department reported that the fire spread quickly, initially being brought under control before flaring up in hidden spaces within the building’s infrastructure. Simms highlighted the challenges firefighters faced due to the theatre’s rigging and complex catwalks, which made access to the flames particularly difficult.
As of now, the theatre is expected to resume performances on May 21, although the production team has stated that updates will be provided should the situation change. The completed repairs are being overseen by an experienced team, and the theatre management expressed gratitude to the Fire Department and the Department of Buildings for their assistance during this time.
To mark the upcoming 15th anniversary of the show, the box office will reopen on May 15 and will offer special tickets. The first fifty patrons in line will have the chance to purchase up to two tickets at a reduced price of £15 each for selected summer performances, celebrating this milestone in an affordable way for fans.
In the wake of the fire, one firefighter suffered a minor injury, but fortunately, no theatre personnel were harmed during the incident. Investigators are still working to ascertain the exact cause of the fire, which has posed a substantial challenge due to the extent of damage incurred.
