In an interview with PEOPLE, Roth shared that the unexpected news broke just after the Super Bowl. Following a busy weekend of hosting friends and family, she was in the midst of preparing for a family snowboarding trip to Japan. A sudden impulse prompted her to take a pregnancy test before they departed, leading to a shockingly positive result. “I was completely shocked and instantly emotional,” Roth recounted, reflecting on the faint lines that confirmed her pregnancy.
Having faced challenges in conceiving Darla, Roth and Brett had not anticipated expanding their family so soon. “It took us over a year to get pregnant with our second daughter, Darla, and we needed medical intervention, so a spontaneous pregnancy was the last thing I expected,” she explained. The couple’s reaction was one of disbelief but also excitement upon sharing the news with each other. “I immediately ran downstairs to tell my husband, and he had the exact same reaction—total disbelief mixed with excitement.”
Roth mentioned that the couple had to cancel their planned snowboarding holiday due to the unexpected developments. Instead, they opted to take their daughters to the beach. The change in plans hastened their announcement to family and friends, which occurred through a group text that Roth described as “the unthinkable.” The family and friends, who are largely spread out since the pair moved to Utah, responded positively but were surprised at the method of communication.
The excitement was palpable from their eldest daughter, Hazel, who had just turned five. Roth shared how Hazel reacted joyously, eager to embrace her role as a big sister once again. However, her own experience of pregnancy has been less than pleasant this time around, as she has faced significant nausea. “The first 12 weeks were very similar to my previous pregnancies—constant nausea, feeling underwater all day long,” she said. Despite the discomfort, Roth found some comfort in managing her blood sugar and prioritising protein intake.
As the pregnancy progresses, Roth has revealed that while she and her husband know the sex of their upcoming baby, they are opting to keep it a secret for the time being. They have begun discussions about names, adhering to what Roth refers to as the “Supreme Court Test”—a self-imposed guideline to ensure the names are easy to spell and would suit a dignified position in society. “If there are five different spellings, it’s probably out,” she noted, highlighting their previous choices of Hazel and Darla, who both met the criteria.
Looking ahead to the arrival of their new addition, Roth expressed her optimism for this upcoming chapter in her life. “Motherhood has truly been the greatest joy and privilege of my life,” she said, reflecting on her journey thus far. She also acknowledged the challenges they have faced, from welcoming their first child just as the pandemic began to navigating early complications with Darla.
As the family prepares for their newest member, Roth is hoping for a more tranquil environment during the birth. “After having our first baby one month into COVID and our second arriving early and spending time in the NICU while we were also moving to a new state, I’m honestly just hoping for a little less chaos surrounding this birth,” she remarked.
Roth concluded, expressing her excitement about the new addition to their family, which she sees as the final piece of their family unit. Yet, humouring the unpredictability of family life, she acknowledged that she might have said the same thing after the birth of each of her daughters.
