James Franco made his return to the Cannes Film Festival, marking his first appearance at the prestigious event in five years. This visit comes after he reached a settlement in a lawsuit with two former acting students who had accused him of sexual misconduct. Franco attended the festival with his long-time partner, Izabel Pakzad, and has been eager to address the insinuations regarding his absence from the public eye.

The actor, now aged 48, appeared at the festival’s official dinner on May 12, where he spoke candidly about his recent years, stating, “It’s not true I’ve been hiding out.” Franco insisted that he has been active in the industry, sharing, “I’ve been here the last three or four years running, selling things. They treat me well and I get to go and see great movies.”
Franco’s participation at Cannes coincided with the screening of his latest project, *The Electric Kiss*, which featured an impressive array of stars on the red carpet. Additionally, his action-thriller *Foster* had a market screening on May 11, showcasing his ongoing commitment to film despite the controversies that have surrounded him.
The accusations against Franco surfaced in 2018 when five women, including four of his acting students, alleged sexual misconduct. Subsequently, he settled a lawsuit with two of those women in 2021, agreeing to a payment of $2.235 million. When questioned about whether he feels he has been treated unfairly in the aftermath of these allegations, Franco responded thoughtfully, stating, “I don’t know. What am I going to do? I just go forward and try to live a positive life.”
Franco expressed a desire to focus on the positives, saying, “I just try to be the best person I can be. I think I was put on this planet to make movies. I try to make movies the best I can and it’s kinda like all I can do.” He also mentioned that he is lined up for a role in a significant studio film that he anticipates will be released either at the end of this year or in the summer of 2027.
Since 2017’s *The Disaster Artist*, Franco has not featured in a major Hollywood film until recently. After taking a hiatus from filming between 2019 and 2024, he has since appeared in several projects including *The Price of Money: A Largo Winch Adventure*, *Hey Joe*, *Squali*, and *Bunny-Man*. Alongside *Foster*, he is also set to star in a comedy titled *Toad*, adding to his growing list of credits.
Reflecting on the impact of the allegations and subsequent fallout, Franco admitted to the pain of receiving negative feedback, stating, “Being told you’re bad is painful. But ultimately, that’s kind of what I needed to just stop going the way I was going.” He emphasised that this period of reflection helped him redirect his focus and priorities.
In an interview with Variety, Franco shared insights into his life outside of the film industry, noting that he has dedicated considerable time to personal growth and his relationship with Pakzad, who he has been with for over seven years. He acknowledged that prior to this relationship, he struggled with emotional intimacy, explaining, “I was just too scared… to have any sort of real intimacy with anyone.”
The Cannes Film Festival runs until May 23, featuring a diverse lineup of films and events. Franco’s return to the spotlight comes amidst a landscape very much focused on accountability and personal responsibility, making his presence at such a high-profile event particularly noteworthy.
