However, rather than allowing his disability to hinder his aspirations, Hamilton has made history as the first disabled driver to compete in the British Touring Car Championship (BTCC).
Born into a family deeply entrenched in motorsport, Nic grew up in the shadow of his older half-brother, Lewis Hamilton, a seven-time Formula One champion. The family routinely travelled around the UK to support Lewis as he honed his skills on the racing circuit. From a young age, Nic was captivated by the adrenaline of racing, feeling a magnetic pull towards the sport that would ultimately shape his life. Yet, as he pursued his racing dreams, he struggled with understanding his own identity in a world where he was physically different.
“My parents did everything they could to help me overcome my disability,” Nic explains. “They never treated me any differently, which helped me navigate the challenges. If there were an easier path, I wouldn’t choose it; pushing beyond my comfort zone is where I find growth.”
In addition to personal achievement, Nic has come to understand that he represents something much larger than his individual racing career. “I often liken myself to a Paralympian competing in the Olympics,” he explains. “I’ve realised that I stand for so many people, causes, and beliefs in motorsport.” Each race, he feels, is an achievement in its own right, and he aims to push against the boundaries of what disabled athletes can achieve.
Despite the challenges he faces, Nic’s ultimate goal reaches beyond personal success; he aspires to demonstrate that disabled drivers can compete successfully against their able-bodied counterparts. “I want to prove that I can beat them at their own game,” he remarks with determination. “I’ve achieved that already, but there is so much more to accomplish.”
