During their visit to the amusement park in Agawam, Massachusetts, Stanley, along with a friend and her two children, had initially enjoyed the ride. “We went up, we had a blast,” she recounted in an interview with local media, including NBC 10 News and Fun 107. Encouraged by the fun, they decided to take a second turn on the Joker. However, midway through their ride, anticipation quickly turned to apprehension when the roller coaster halted at the very top of the lift hill.
Stanley described the initial moments of their predicament as easily manageable, as light rain began to fall. This changed when her young seatmate, an 11-year-old girl, voiced her concern after hearing a peculiar clicking sound associated with the ride. In an effort to reassure the girl, Stanley stated, “It’s just because the track’s wet, don’t worry about it, we’re going to be fine.” However, the situation grew increasingly tense as the ride remained stationary on the steep incline.
The Joker roller coaster features a thrilling 120-foot lift followed by a steep 90-degree drop, making the unexpected stop all the more alarming. Stanley told reporters that they found themselves at an angled position, exposed to the elements as the rain intensified. To ease her companion’s fears, she pointed out various attractions within the park, suggesting fun activities they could enjoy on future visits.
After what must have felt like an eternity, a voice finally came over the loudspeaker, announcing the ride would be “unlocked.” Following this announcement, the coaster was safely sent down the remaining track and into the station, where park staff were waiting to assist the disembarking riders. Upon their arrival, Stanley and her group were greeted with dry clothing, food vouchers, and Fast Lane passes that would allow them priority access on their next visit.
Despite her experience, Stanley expressed a fondness for the Joker roller coaster, which was her favourite ride prior to the incident. “Will I go back to Six Flags? One hundred percent,” she affirmed, although she admitted that she might be hesitant to ride the Joker again in the near future.
