On May 11, Selena Gomez proudly unveiled a new campaign for her beauty brand Rare Beauty, which aims to celebrate the diverse identities within the Latin American community. This initiative features 48 individuals, each showcasing one of the 48 shades of the brand’s latest addition: the True to Myself Natural Matte Longwear Foundation.

The 33-year-old singer and actress expressed her enthusiasm for the campaign, stating, “To see such a wide spectrum of skin tones and identities represented so purposefully is everything I dreamed of when I started Rare Beauty.” Photos for the campaign were taken by the Chicana and Costa Rican director and photographer Brittany Bravo and feature notable influencers such as Desi Perkins, Monica Veloz, and Mikayla Nicole, who are also part of the campaign.
Gomez’s connection to her Mexican heritage is evident, as she has spoken candidly about her family’s influence on her artistic journey. Her paternal grandparents emigrated from Monterrey, Mexico, to Texas during the 1970s. “What makes me most proud is our resilience and complexity,” she noted. “I’m proud that being Latina can mean so many different things, and that those differences are something to celebrate.”

The campaign is designed to challenge the traditional representations of beauty, showcasing the many facets of Latina identity. Gomez remarked, “There isn’t just ‘one way’ to be a Latina.” This project aligns with her vision of using her platform to highlight the depth and dimensions of her community, hoping to inspire others to embrace their individuality.

Gomez narrated her own experiences growing up, revealing that she often struggled to see reflections of herself in mainstream beauty campaigns. With this new initiative, she seeks to create an empowering space for young Latine individuals. “I would tell them that they’re not alone,” she said, encouraging them to recognise the power in their uniqueness rather than comparing themselves to others.
The collaboration between Rare Beauty and Ulta Beauty ensures a wide reach for this campaign, hoping to touch the hearts of many who share similar backgrounds. “Our differences are what makes us beautiful,” Gomez affirmed, reminding young people that diversity is not just accepted but celebrated.
Through this campaign, Gomez hopes to encourage a broader dialogue about representation in beauty and media, emphasising that every story within the community is valid and deserves to be told. She believes such visibility can promote a sense of belonging and pride among individuals from diverse backgrounds.
As Gomez continues to cultivate her brand, her commitment to celebrating Latin American identities stands at the forefront. Rare Beauty is more than just a line of products; it is a movement that seeks to uplift and empower all individuals, particularly those from underrepresented communities. In doing so, Selena Gomez not only honours her heritage but also paves the way for future generations to embrace their unique stories and identities.
