A dramatic rescue unfolded in the Pacific Ocean recently, highlighting the connection between two brothers and the fragility of life at sea. Craig McCabe, a 58-year-old corporate lawyer, found himself in a life-threatening situation after falling from his yacht near Marina del Rey.

On 12 January, McCabe embarked on a solo voyage aboard his 65-foot vessel, at a critical juncture in his life. He had been contemplating a significant career change, deliberating whether to continue with his high-paying legal career or return to a passion for advocating for abused children—a role he once valued immensely. Despite his internal conflict, he had seemingly made a decision to prioritise financial gain.
However, that decision quickly became inconsequential when McCabe lost his footing and plunged into the ocean while leaning over the side of his yacht. In an instant, he was submerged in the cold, vast waters of the Pacific. Realising that his boat was continuing on without him, McCabe began to swim towards a buoy he estimated was approximately three-quarters of a mile away.
As time passed and hope dwindled, the struggle against the waves took its toll. After an hour and a half of strenuous swimming, McCabe’s energy began to deplete. As he scanned the water, he spotted an unexpected lifeline: a half-inflated party balloon floating nearby. Grabbing it, he used the balloon to stay afloat, but as it gradually lost air, his situation became increasingly desperate.
McCabe recalled the harrowing moment: “I started going under. I was drowning.” While he fought for his life, his brother, Lance McCabe, was in motion, racing against time in search of his sibling. After receiving a distressing call from a friend about a boat incident near Santa Catalina Island, approximately 30 miles offshore, Lance took immediate action. He confirmed the involvement of Craig’s yacht with the Coast Guard and commandeered a speedboat to join the rescue efforts.
Hours passed in what can only be described as a frantic chase across the ocean. Eventually, against all odds, Lance’s keen eyes spotted something in the water. Distressed yet determined, he recognised a small figure—Craig, a “speck in an empty ocean”, as described by Lance.
In a near-miraculous moment, he and a companion navigated their boat towards the barely visible form and plunged into the water to retrieve Craig just as he began to slip beneath the surface. The astounding effort culminated in a successful rescue, with Craig being pulled aboard and rushed to safety.
Upon arrival at the hospital, it became clear that Craig was suffering from hypothermia but remained conscious and grateful. His harrowing experience became a pivotal point in his life. During his recovery, he reflected on his career aspirations and made a profound decision to re-enter child advocacy, abandoning the corporate law path he had previously chosen.
This life-altering incident not only fortuitously reunited the brothers but also prompted a significant shift in Craig’s professional journey. He emerged from the ordeal with a renewed sense of purpose, driven by his earlier passion for helping those in need.
