Sally Field, renowned actress and two-time Academy Award winner, is set to star in the upcoming Netflix film adaptation of Shelby Van Pelt’s bestselling novel, *Remarkably Bright Creatures*. In an exclusive interview with *PEOPLE*, Field shared insights into her role as Tova, an elderly widow who forms an extraordinary bond with an octopus while working the night shift at an aquarium.

The film, which also features actor Lewis Pullman, explores themes of healing, family, and the connections between humans and sea creatures. Field described the narrative as “a lovely, lovely little book” that resonates on multiple levels. “It’s an homage to sea creatures and talks about family in a very unique way,” she noted, emphasising its poignant qualities.
Field had been aware of the book even before its publication due to her son, Peter’s involvement in the Night Owl Stories production company. “Bryan Unkeless and Peter Craig were starting their company, and Bryan was given the manuscript in galleys. He suggested it to my son, who then passed it on to me,” she explained. This early exposure sparked Field’s interest, leading her to read the first few chapters and agree to adapt the story for the screen.
The process of adapting *Remarkably Bright Creatures* provided Field with a role she found particularly compelling, especially as an actress navigating the industry later in life. She expressed frustration with the typified narratives surrounding older women in film. “It’s challenging to find roles that do justice to the experiences of older women. I have no interest in stories that merely revolve around a woman seeking a man,” Field remarked. “Women have so much more to offer, and this role truly reflects that.”
The film’s collaborative atmosphere played a significant part in the development of Field’s character. She shared that much of what is portrayed in the film came from improvisation with her co-star Pullman. “I’m incredibly invested in this project, and so much of what we created together has a personal touch,” she said, praising the dynamic they established on set.
Shelby Van Pelt’s debut novel has garnered widespread acclaim since its release in 2022, becoming an instant *New York Times* bestseller and a selection for Jenna Bush Hager’s Read with Jenna Book Club. This initial success undoubtedly set high expectations for the film adaptation, which Field hopes will capture the essence of the original story.
As Field reflects on her illustrious career, she recalls her iconic roles in productions such as *Gidget*, *Mrs. Doubtfire*, and *Norma Rae*, the latter of which earned her critical acclaim and her first Oscar. “I’ve had to remind myself that if I feel unfulfilled, it’s up to me to seek out projects that truly resonate with me,” she remarked, underlining her commitment to choosing roles that reflect her values.
*Remarkably Bright Creatures* will premiere on Netflix on 8th May and promises to offer viewers a heartfelt exploration of human connection and the unexpected relationships that can heal. As Field embarks on this new chapter, she remains hopeful that audiences will connect with the film’s themes as deeply as she has.
With the anticipation building for this touching adaptation, fans of both Field and Van Pelt eagerly await the opportunity to see how this remarkable story unfolds on screen.
