**Scientists Investigate Invasive Pink Salmon in the Great Lakes as Ecosystem Threat**

In a groundbreaking study, researchers are focusing on pink salmon which were accidentally introduced into the Great Lakes nearly seventy years ago. The pink salmon (Oncorhynchus gorbuscha) was released into Lake Superior in 1956, following an unintended introduction linked to a Hudson Bay stocking project which resulted in excess juvenile fish being let loose into nearby waterways. The Great Lakes are being viewed as a unique “natural laboratory” that can provide valuable insights into how the pink salmon’s behaviour might influence larger marine environments. Researchers have discovered that the fish have adapted remarkably to their new freshwater habitat, evolving from a migratory species to one capable of thriving entirely in a non-saline environment. Additionally, evidence suggests that their life cycle has changed; while pink salmon traditionally mature in two years, some are now taking up to four years before they spawn.
Wes Larson, a genetic researcher with NOAA’s Auke Bay Laboratories, noted the adaptability of pink salmon has rendered them both ingenious survivors and formidable invaders. “Their ability to adjust to new conditions makes them exceptional at exploiting new habitats,” Larson stated.
The expansion of pink salmon populations has already raised alarm in countries such as Norway. Regional authorities are taking action by installing barriers in rivers to prevent the fish from reaching native populations, including the much-valued Atlantic salmon, Arctic char, and brown trout. The fear is that the invasion of pink salmon could significantly disrupt local ecosystems and the economies reliant upon them.
Researchers are linking the rapid expansion of pink salmon to climate change and environmental shifts that may be contributing to warmer oceanic temperatures. Our research underscores the urgency of developing adaptable management strategies that can keep pace with these environmental shifts,” Langan stated, advocating for a united approach in tackling the challenges posed by invasive species.
