A 42-year-old man has been sentenced to two decades in prison for the violent attack on a young artist that left her paralysed from the shoulders down. Kamal Semrade was found guilty of attempted murder and assault and was sentenced on Wednesday, following an incident that occurred on May 21, 2023, in the Lexington Avenue-63rd Street subway station in Manhattan.

Emine Yilmaz Ozsoy, a 35-year-old graphic designer, faced her attacker during the court proceedings, delivering a heart-wrenching statement about the trauma she has endured since the random act of violence. “There hasn’t been a single moment when I have been able to leave this experience behind, or truly find peace,” Ozsoy expressed, highlighting the profound impact the attack has had on her life.

Prosecutors outlined the harrowing details of the assault, revealing that Semrade had boarded the same train as Ozsoy at the Roosevelt Avenue stop in Queens before trailing her to the Lexington Avenue station. It was there, shortly after 6:00 a.m., that he violently shoved her into a moving train, resulting in severe injuries that fractured her spine.

Ozsoy’s head and face struck the train before she was thrown back onto the platform. Following a 14-hour surgery, she is now left with permanent paralysis. Following the attack, Semrade fled the scene, returning to the Queens shelter where he resided. It was through the efforts of shelter staff, who recognised him from an NYPD CrimeStoppers post, that he was apprehended two days later. Remarkably, Semrade had previously maintained a clean record, working as a food delivery driver prior to the incident.

During the sentencing hearing, Judge Althea Drysdale condemned Semrade’s actions, declaring the randomness of the attack deeply troubling. “The sheer randomness of this incident is profoundly disturbing to this court,” she commented.
