An eight-month-old baby, Estelle, is currently receiving treatment in paediatric intensive care as she awaits a crucial heart transplant. The infant, born with a severe congenital heart defect known as a ventricular septal defect (VSD), has been in hospital since November 2025, and her mother, Estee Williams, has been sharing updates on social media about her daughter’s journey.

Estelle was diagnosed with an exceptionally large VSD just two days after her birth on 5 September 2025. While VSDs, which are holes between the heart’s ventricles, are relatively common in newborns, Estelle’s condition is considered extraordinary in terms of severity. Williams previously stated that the size of the defect — approximately three centimetres — posed a significant challenge, reportedly described as the largest VSD her surgeon had ever encountered.
In April 2026, there was a significant setback in Estelle’s treatment when she was deemed ineligible for a heart transplant due to a series of complications including sepsis and blood clotting issues. This news left Williams and her husband Conner devastated, as they faced uncertainty about their daughter’s future. However, following improvements in her condition, Estelle has regained eligibility for a transplant and has risen to the top of the Northeast transplant list.
In an emotional update shared on 7 May, Estee Williams revealed that her daughter had been listed as status 1A on the heart transplant list for the past four months. This designation represents the highest priority level for patients awaiting organ transplants. Williams stated, “We never declined any offers while she was unable to take a heart about a month ago,” highlighting the family’s commitment to securing the transplant.
Despite the ongoing challenges, Williams has also shared positive moments. According to her, Estelle has periods during the day where she is awake and able to interact with her parents. “We read books to her, play music with her, and lay our faces next to hers,” she recounted. Unfortunately, the couple have not seen their daughter smile since her first operation, and they are eager to encourage her to express joy during these intimate moments.
The path to recovery has not been straightforward. Estelle’s health took a critical turn just before Christmas in 2025 when she went into cardiac arrest, necessitating the use of ECMO life support. Currently, she is one of only 60 children worldwide receiving assistance from a Berlin Heart, a device designed to support the function of her failing heart as the family waits for a suitable donor.
In her latest posts, Williams has indicated that Estelle is expected to undergo further testing on her kidneys soon, as they hope to reduce her reliance on continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) dialysis. This step is seen as a crucial part of her ongoing recovery process.
