Sydney Towle, a 26-year-old influencer known for her candid sharing on social media about battling a rare form of cancer, recently updated her followers regarding a concerning health incident. On May 5, Towle reported being taken to hospital after medical staff at her chemotherapy centre identified dangerously high calcium levels.

Known for her authentic documentation of her journey with cholangiocarcinoma—a bile duct cancer diagnosed when she was just 23—Towle has amassed a following of over 932,000 on TikTok. She let her audience know about her unexpected hospitalisation via a video recorded on the day of the incident, explaining, “Well, we tried going to chemo, but they’re calling the ambulance because they say I need to go to the hospital because my calcium is really high.”

Towle remained silent on social media for almost three hours following her ambulance ride, but later provided an update to her fans. Upon re-emerging online, she expressed her feelings of anxiety about the day’s events. “Hi, gorgeous, gorgeous people,” she began, addressing her followers. Dismissing the ordeal as a “very terrifying day,” she described her experience in the chemotherapy unit as one that left her feeling vulnerable and apprehensive due to her oncologist’s alarming reaction.
The influencer recounted how her oncologist expressed significant concern for her condition, stating he had never before felt the need to call for emergency assistance. “That kind of freaked me out because a lot of times, I think that we know that we’re supposed to have this feeling when things are going downhill, but I don’t have that feeling,” she candidly shared.
Following an overnight hospital stay, doctors discovered that fluid had accumulated around her pump and in her abdomen, revealing a further deterioration in her condition. Towle disclosed that her oncologist had informed her of the growth of metastases in her liver, prompting her to voice her concerns about the frequency of missed chemotherapy treatments. “I’m hoping that this will remedy itself soon. I just didn’t expect it to hit this hard, this fast,” she reflected with an air of resignation.
Earlier that day, Towle had documented her journey to the chemotherapy centre on TikTok, indicating that it ranked among her “top 5 worst days.” She mentioned her mother accompanied her on the train to New York, stating, “My mom got on the train with me to New York because the nurses didn’t think I could make it alone.” Echoing a sentiment of hope despite recent setbacks, she concluded her post positively, saying, “Tomorrow will be better.”
In subsequent videos, Towle shared her exploration of alternative cancer treatment options, admitting frustration with her current regimen. On the same day she was hospitalised, she disclosed intentions to undergo apheresis, a procedure that involves extracting specific blood components to potentially improve her condition.
By May 6, Towle had experienced intense physical discomfort following her treatment. She elaborated on her ordeal, describing persistent nausea, severe stomach pains, and the aftermath of a catheter placement that led to excruciating pain. She noted that her oncologist had advised against travelling alone due to her evident fragility.
Amidst these challenges, Towle has also confirmed her participation in a new clinical trial. In an earlier TikTok post, she shared the successful harvesting of part of one of her tumours during a recent surgery. The collected sample is being sent to a laboratory where doctors plan to isolate immune cells for potential treatment applications.
Towle previously indicated that the lab requires two months to assess the potential of using the isolated cells in her treatment for cholangiocarcinoma. Should this endeavour prove fruitful, she expressed certainty about an 80% chance of developing a viable treatment option.
As Towle navigates this tumultuous chapter in her health journey, her support network continues to rally behind her. Amidst both physical and emotional hurdles, her determined spirit remains a source of inspiration for many who follow her story online.
