An 83-year-old American man tragically lost his life while snorkelling at Great Stirrup Cay, a private island owned by Norwegian Cruise Line, during a family excursion. The incident occurred on Sunday, May 3, and has prompted local authorities to investigate the circumstances surrounding his death.

The man was snorkelling with his son when he became unresponsive. According to reports, the son had ventured ahead of his father during their underwater exploration. Upon realising that his father had stopped making progress, he returned to find him unresponsive, leading to immediate concerns for the elder man’s wellbeing.

Local police were alerted to the situation shortly after 3 p.m. local time. Emergency responders, including a doctor from the island, were dispatched to the scene but unfortunately pronounced the man deceased after determining that he had no vital signs.

At the time of the incident, the Norwegian Getaway, a cruise ship accommodating nearly 4,000 passengers, was docked at Great Stirrup Cay as part of its itinerary, which had begun in Miami. The ship had made stops in Nassau, Bahamas, before reaching the private island. It is worth noting that the Getaway operates a schedule that allows for guests to explore Great Stirrup Cay from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. on the day of visits.
Great Stirrup Cay, part of the Berry Islands in the Bahamas, is exclusively accessible to Norwegian Cruise Line’s vessels. The island spans 270 acres and is famed for its exquisite white-sand beaches and recreational activities, which include a large heated pool, ziplining, and various water sports such as snorkelling.
Although the cruise line was approached for a comment regarding the incident, no immediate response was forthcoming. Local authorities are continuing their investigation, and it remains unclear what specifically may have led to the man’s drowning.
This incident is a grim reminder of the risks associated with water activities. Just last month, a similar tragedy occurred involving a 67-year-old woman from Tasmania, who was found unresponsive while snorkelling near Moreton Island in Australia. Authorities reported that she was located near the Tangalooma Wrecks, a popular snorkelling site in the area. Despite attempts at resuscitation, she was pronounced dead at the scene.
As investigations continue in both incidents, families who engage in such recreational activities are urged to take care and remain vigilant, particularly in unfamiliar environments.
The unfortunate passing of the snorkeller raises important discussions surrounding safety measures for cruise ship excursions. It is essential that all participants are adequately informed about the potential hazards of snorkelling and the importance of staying within visible proximity to fellow snorkellers or tour guides.
In light of these events, cruise lines may need to reinforce their safety protocols to ensure that all guests are equipped with the necessary knowledge and equipment to enjoy their activities in a safe and responsible manner.
