Spirit Airlines officially ceased operations on 2 May, following an unsuccessful attempt at securing a bailout. The sudden shutdown left many employees in a state of uncertainty and sadness. However, a heartwarming gesture from a different airline provided some comfort to those affected.

Former Spirit Airlines flight attendant Clarissa Young took to Instagram to share a note she received from the crew of United Airlines during her journey home. The touching message was given to her as she boarded a United flight, and it conveyed words of support and solidarity during this challenging time. The note began with “To our Spirit girly,” expressing love and understanding, and concluded with the sentiment “united by wings.” Crew members added their own encouraging messages alongside their signatures, such as “keep your head up” and “I hope your next journey is full of love and blessings.”
Young expressed her gratitude for the note and its impact on her during a difficult transition. She shared her hopes of continuing her career as a flight attendant with another airline, stating, “Feeling the love! Thank you United for getting me home! I trust God! I’ll be flying with another airline soon!” Her message resonated with many followers, highlighting the supportive nature of the aviation community.

United Airlines was not alone in providing comfort to former Spirit employees. On the same day of Spirit’s closure, Captain Jon Jackson was set to operate his final flight for the airline into Baltimore. However, the abrupt halt in operations meant that he could not complete this milestone flight. Instead, Captain Jackson, accompanied by his son Chris—a pilot for Southwest Airlines—boarded a Southwest flight to Baltimore.

Upon learning of Jackson’s situation, the Southwest crew decided to turn a potentially disheartening day into a memorable one. They coordinated a surprise retirement celebration for Jackson upon landing in Baltimore. The plan was executed seamlessly, with the airport’s fire and rescue team greeting the arriving aircraft with a traditional water cannon salute, a gesture typically reserved for significant milestones in aviation.
The festive atmosphere continued on the ground, where members of the Baltimore Ground Operations Team awaited Jackson’s arrival. They welcomed him with cheers and even provided a bottle of champagne to commemorate the occasion. A video shared alongside Southwest’s announcement captured the joyful moment as Jackson disembarked the aircraft, visibly moved by the reception.
In a brief and emotional speech, Jackson expressed his gratitude to both the Southwest team and the aviation community at large. He stated, “This is overwhelming, I can’t thank you all enough. As Spirit goes down, this is a sad day and you guys made it incredible, so thank you so much.” His heartfelt words underscored the sense of camaraderie that exists among those in the aviation industry, regardless of airline affiliation.
Southwest Airlines’ thoughtful gesture was not only a send-off for Captain Jackson but also a poignant reminder of the unity and respect that characterise the aviation community. The airlines’ actions reflect a deeper truth about compassion and solidarity, especially during times of crisis and transition.
Both instances of kindness, from United Airlines and Southwest, illustrate the resilience of the aviation community. While Spirit Airlines’ closure has undoubtedly led to a considerable upheaval for its employees, the support from other airlines shows that kindness and encouragement can thrive even amidst challenging circumstances.
As former Spirit employees navigate their next steps, many will undoubtedly hold on to the messages of solidarity and encouragement from their fellow aviation professionals, helping them embark on their future journeys with hope.
