In a recent interview, Ziggy Marley reflected on the significant role his catchy theme song for the beloved children’s television series “Arthur” has played in his career. The song, titled “Believe in Yourself,” was composed by Marley in 1996, coinciding with the launch of the series. Despite its popularity, Marley revealed that many people were unaware of his connection to this iconic track until recently.

Speaking on The Zach Sang Show, Marley expressed his growing awareness of the song’s impact. It has become increasingly clear to him, as he travels and interacts with fans, that the theme resonates deeply with audiences. “A lot of people didn’t know that I sing the song. A lot of people have realised it now,” he noted, indicating that the association has only begun to penetrate his consciousness in recent years.

Marley’s journey to creating the theme song began during a period when he was living in Jamaica. At that time, he was part of the band Ziggy Marley and the Melody Makers, who had already gained experience in children’s music through their work on “Sesame Street.” The infectious nature of their music made it a suitable fit for children’s entertainment. “It seemed like our music and who we are all just kind of lend themselves to the space of children,” Marley explained.

When asked how he ended up recording “Believe in Yourself,” Marley described the process as straightforward. An associate had approached him with an idea, which they enthusiastically adapted into a song. Reflecting on the show’s long tenure, which ran until 2022, Marley remarked, “If I would have known it would last this long, I would have done a better contract.”
Marley is no stranger to the children’s entertainment world as he continues to contribute to it. Last year, he published a children’s book entitled “Pajammin,” which was inspired by his father’s musical legacy. Bob Marley’s joyful spirit played a significant role in shaping the narrative of the book, which focuses on bedtime routines. “It’s the only book I’ve done that was influenced by him,” said Ziggy, highlighting how the energy of the beloved song “Jammin'” served as a model for his writing.
The book aims to not only captivate young readers but also to foster parent-child interaction, as Marley encourages parents to read and sing the text to their children. “The energy behind it is the same kind of energy my father had,” he remarked, emphasising the importance of joy and rhythm in both his music and storytelling.
In total, Marley has seven children, four of whom he shares with his wife, Orly, whom he has been married to for over two decades. His role as a father undoubtedly fuels his passion for creating meaningful content for children, bridging the gap between music and literature.
As the legacy of “Arthur” and its inspirational theme song continues to resonate with multiple generations, Ziggy Marley’s contributions to children’s culture remain significant. The ongoing appreciation for “Believe in Yourself” serves as a reminder of the enduring power of music and storytelling in shaping the experiences of young audiences.
Reflecting on his past work and current projects, Marley continues to evolve as an artist while honouring his father’s legacy. His journey underscores the importance of creativity in nurturing the next generation, encapsulating a message that “Arthur” fans—both young and old—can cherish for years to come.
