Hasbro has announced the launch of the Ultimate Grogu, an animatronic replica of the beloved character from the upcoming film *The Mandalorian and Grogu*. Available for pre-order starting 30th April at 6 PM BST, this product is poised to become a must-have item for Star Wars enthusiasts eager to bring a piece of the galaxy far, far away into their homes.

Retailing at £599.99, the Ultimate Grogu features an impressive array of over 250 animations and sound combinations, designed to replicate the charming behaviours of the character, commonly referred to as Baby Yoda. Standing at 14.6 inches tall and weighing nearly nine pounds, the collectible is a one-to-one representation of Grogu as he appears on the big screen, incorporating stand-in props meticulously crafted for the film.
According to Adam Biehl, the head of Disney action brands at Hasbro, the development of Ultimate Grogu has been nothing short of a dream project for the team. “This creation is that,” Biehl remarked, highlighting the blend of advanced technology and nostalgic appeal. The engineering team aimed to ensure that the animatronic doesn’t just feel like a high-tech gadget but brings the character’s magical essence right into consumers’ homes.
The comprehensive design process took approximately two years, involving significant collaboration with Disney and Lucasfilm. Mel Hershey, a principal innovation and design engineer at Hasbro, emphasized the importance of creating a product that looks just like the character from the film and captures his charming personality, stating, “It’s the real character coming off the screen into your house.”
Ultimate Grogu boasts four built-in motors and 18 points of articulation, which allow for realistic movements including head tilts, ear flaps, and arm gestures. Fans will be delighted to discover that Grogu can even reach out with his arms in a manner affectionately termed “uppies,” a nod to his endearing nature.
To enhance interaction, the replica is equipped with seven sensors that respond to the movements, sounds, and touch of people nearby. Claire Goolsby, an electrical engineer at Hasbro, explained that directional audio sensing technology enables Grogu to react appropriately depending on the situation. “He’s going to turn left or right or toward the centre to really make him feel like he is part of your dinner table, your game night or any sort of action,” she said. It’s worth noting that these microphones are not designed to record conversations but are strictly for interaction purposes.
The creation of Ultimate Grogu was fuelled by Hasbro’s collaboration with Lucasfilm’s sound department, Skywalker Sound. They had unprecedented access to the original sound effects to ensure every coo and babble is authentic. During the design phase, the team also had the opportunity to visit the set of *The Mandalorian and Grogu*, enabling them to observe first-hand how director Jon Favreau’s team animated the character using state-of-the-art puppetry techniques.
Melissa “MJ” Panzica, an associate principal product designer at Hasbro, took great pride in the details of Grogu’s design, particularly his hair. The meticulous attention to detail extended to all aspects of the character, ensuring that fans would have an accurate representation of Grogu, from his skin colour to the texture of his fabric attire.
As the pre-order date approaches, excitement continues to build among fans eager to own a piece of Star Wars memorabilia that captures the heart of one of the franchise’s most beloved characters. With its immersive and interactive features, Ultimate Grogu is set to become a standout collectible as it joins the ranks of iconic merchandise from this legendary series.
Ultimately, Hasbro’s Ultimate Grogu aims to cater not just to collectors but also to a new generation of fans who have fallen in love with the character through *The Mandalorian*. As the film’s release date draws nearer, this life-like companion aims to bridge the gap between fantasy and reality, offering enthusiasts a tangible connection to the Star Wars universe.
