Richard Gadd, a 36-year-old actor, recently revealed that he underwent a significant physical transformation, gaining nearly 100 pounds in preparation for his role in the upcoming project ‘Half Man’. This radical change follows Gadd’s previous performance as Donny Dunn in the play ‘Baby Reindeer’, where he portrayed a fictionalised version of himself. The shift in his physique was not merely cosmetic but a critical artistic decision aimed at helping him fully embody his new character, Ruben.

In a candid interview on the ‘How to Fail’ podcast, hosted by Elizabeth Day, Gadd discussed the extent of his transformation. He indicated that he recognised the necessity of distancing himself from his earlier character to achieve credibility in his new role. “I knew in order for people to buy me as Ruben I needed to get away from Donny Dunn in almost every single way I could,” Gadd explained.
Reflecting on his time filming ‘Baby Reindeer’, Gadd disclosed that he had weighed approximately 68.8 kg (151 lbs) at the time, leading him to look noticeably thin. “I wanted to feel vulnerable in my body and slight. I wanted to feel young and youthful,” he shared. However, to authentically present Ruben, he realised a complete reversal was needed, reaching a peak weight of 110 kg (242 lbs) during the filming of ‘Half Man’.
The actor acknowledged the challenges associated with such a drastic change, stating, “I needed to change everything. My size, my voice, my beard, my hairstyle, everything. I needed to transform.” Gadd emphasised that the commitment to altering multiple aspects of his identity made the process all the more significant. “It’s hard enough just to focus on the role as an actor; doing everything else alongside is obviously a huge commitment,” he added.
Gadd also spoke to ‘Men’s Health’ about his intense training regime and dietary changes leading up to the filming. He committed to training six times a week, often doubling his sessions, while placing a strong emphasis on his nutrition. “I had a nutritionist. I had a personal trainer. There was a company in England that would send meals up – it was always high protein, no matter what,” Gadd explained, detailing the structured approach he took to his diet.
In the early stages of his preparation, Gadd opted for a carbohydrate-heavy diet, recognising that a conventional lean bulk would not provide him with the necessary bulk for the role. “We knew that a lean bulk wasn’t going to give me what I needed to look big. I also wanted Ruben to look real. I never wanted it to be a veiny, steroid look,” he remarked.
While undergoing this physical change, Gadd credited his trainer, David Jenkins, and nutritionist, Dr. Andrew Usher, for supporting him in his ambitious efforts. “Together they put me through my paces,” he revealed. “They never let me slack off and always pushed me, and I’m always up for a challenge.”
As Gadd continues to draw attention for his extraordinary dedication, his works remain accessible to audiences. ‘Baby Reindeer’ is currently streaming on Netflix, while ‘Half Man’ can be found on HBO Max, showcasing the actor’s remarkable journey and professional growth.
As the landscape of acting grows increasingly demanding, Gadd’s transformation serves as a testament to the lengths performers will go to inhabit their characters authentically. Whether it’s through physical changes or emotional depth, the commitment to one’s craft remains paramount, and Gadd’s extensive preparation highlights this ethos clearly. His journey will undoubtedly inspire fellow actors and audiences alike, showcasing the profound connection between body and performance in the art of acting.
