According to a statement released by the airport, the woman initially called the Airport Operations Centre to report her distress. Shortly after her call, airport staff utilised security cameras to locate her. While police officers were dispatched to her location, dispatchers attempted to maintain communication, but noted that she became increasingly despondent during the call.
In a distressing turn of events, the woman moved away from her original position and crossed a busy four-lane area known as Upper Terminal Drive. She then climbed a retaining wall, subsequently falling approximately 50 feet to a grassy area below.

Immediately following her fall, airport public safety personnel arrived on the scene within minutes. Keith Berlen, the Senior Director of Operations and Public Safety at Indianapolis International Airport, relayed that the team initiated “continuous medical intervention” as soon as they reached her. This included providing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and employing an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) in an attempt to revive her.
Despite the urgent and comprehensive efforts made by the first responders, the woman was pronounced dead at around 12:19 p.m. local time. Berlen expressed profound sadness over the inability to change the tragic outcome, stating, “We are all deeply saddened that those efforts could not change the outcome.”

Following the incident, the airport extended its condolences to the woman’s family and friends, acknowledging the pain that such loss brings. In light of the circumstances surrounding her death, airport officials have also taken the opportunity to highlight the importance of mental health support. They urged anyone who might be struggling with suicidal thoughts or emotional distress to seek help.
The airport’s statement encouraged individuals to reach out for confidential support, emphasising that the conversation surrounding mental health is crucial. They referenced resources such as the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, encouraging people to call or text 988, or to utilise the online chat available at 988lifeline.org, accessible 24 hours a day.
This incident has prompted discussions around mental health awareness, particularly in public spaces. It underscores the need for continued support systems to assist individuals facing urgent crises. As the airport navigates the aftermath of this tragedy, the focus remains on community wellbeing and ensuring that help is readily available for those in need.
In the wake of such events, it is imperative for society at large to foster dialogues on mental health, encouraging individuals to prioritise their emotional wellbeing and seek assistance when necessary. Instances like this serve as a painful reminder of the importance of accessible mental health resources in every community.
As the Indianapolis International Airport continues to extend its sympathies, the broader community reflects on the tragic loss, recognising the necessity for compassion and understanding towards those who may be struggling.
