Adams County Sheriff Travis Patten revealed that when officers entered the home, they were confronted with a harrowing scene involving her youngest son, Zachary Lavel Jackson, Jr. The deputies found Jackson allegedly attempting to dispose of some of his mother’s remains in a toilet. Witnesses reported that they could hear splashing sounds from a downstairs bathroom, leading them to investigate further.

Upon entering the bathroom, officers discovered a “black substance” in the toilet that raised alarm bells. Initially, the officers were unsure of what they were facing. Given the circumstances, they called for additional support and started searching both the residence and its surroundings, which led to a chilling discovery. According to witnesses, at least one family member shouted, “It’s a head! It’s a head!” signalling the grim finding of more body parts.
Investigators summoned a plumber to assist with the situation, leading to the removal of the toilet. It was reported that within the plumbing, they found human remains, which had been allegedly dismembered by Jackson. Some parts were found in a suitcase while others were flushed, prompting charges against him for numerous offences, including first and second-degree murder.
On 28 April, Jackson appeared in court and opted to waive his right to a preliminary hearing. The specific motivations behind this gruesome act remain unclear, and it has not been disclosed whether he has entered a plea. Furthermore, alongside murder charges, he faces allegations of mayhem and tampering with physical evidence, according to local media reports.
The incident has prompted an outpouring of grief from the local community. Lana Brown Bradley was known not only for her dedication as a retired teacher but also for her passion for poetry. According to online tributes, she had planned to publish a collection of her work, which showcased her creativity and artistic spirit.
Colleagues and friends have expressed their shock and sorrow over Bradley’s death. One colleague remarked on social media about her dedication and warmth, highlighting her unwavering commitment to student success. A post from her daughter also conveyed the need for sensitivity regarding the nature of her death while sharing some of Bradley’s poetry.
Sheriff Patten, reflecting on the incident, commented on the profound impact such a violent crime has on law enforcement. “This is by far the most heinous crime that I’ve ever witnessed in my entire life,” he stated, emphasising the emotional toll it has taken on the officers involved. He further noted that this type of case is one that stays with you long after the investigation is over.
As the investigation continues, the Natchez community grapples with the aftermath of this tragedy, mourning the loss of a cherished figure while struggling to comprehend the circumstances leading to such a brutal act. The case serves as a reminder of the complexities and fragility of familial relationships, raising questions about the motivations and events that can lead to such devastating outcomes.
