A 17-year-old from Sheffield has triumphed against the odds, successfully undergoing a complex 13-hour brain surgery despite living with a rare blood disorder that complicates clotting. Ahmed Khan was diagnosed with Bernard-Soulier Syndrome at birth, a condition characterised by a reduction in the body’s ability to form blood clots effectively. The disorder can lead to an increased risk of bleeding and bruising, and as a result, any surgical procedure poses significant risks, a concern reiterated by his mother, Maryam Bilal.

Khan’s journey dramatically transformed earlier this year when he received a devastating diagnosis of a brain tumour. His mother expressed the profound impact this news had on their family, stating, “You never think you are going to be told that your teenage son has cancer. The whole world just came crashing down around us.” Initially, he was treated with chemotherapy; however, the tumour continued to grow, prompting medical experts to consider surgical intervention as the only viable option left.

Neurosurgeon Veejay Bagga, who led the operation, stated that while surgery posed significant risks due to Khan’s blood disorder, it was a necessity. “If we did nothing, the tumour would have been fatal,” he revealed, underscoring the urgency of the situation. The medical team’s plan involved not only the surgery itself but also extensive preparatory work to ensure safety given Khan’s condition.
In preparation for the operation, Ahmed received blood transfusions to increase his platelet levels—a critical component for clotting—and to mitigate the antibodies that could increase the risk of severe bleeding. Remarkably, the operation required blood donations from an astounding 113 individuals, with NHS Blood and Transplant facilitating the matching of platelet units specifically for Ahmed. This included 10 units for the surgery itself and an additional 24 to support his recovery thereafter.
On the day of the procedure, led by a team of specialists at Sheffield Children’s Hospital, the medical team worked tirelessly for 13 hours. The hard work and collaboration of the healthcare staff made a significant difference, culminating in a successful outcome. By November 2025, Ahmed Khan was declared cancer-free, marking a triumphant moment for both him and his family.
Dr Jeanette Payne, a haematologist who played a vital role in coordinating Ahmed’s complex blood management plan, expressed her relief and happiness at his recovery. “I have looked after Ahmed since diagnosing his condition when he was a baby,” she reflected. “When he developed a brain tumour as a teenager it was incredibly worrying because treating cancer in someone with a severe bleeding disorder is extremely challenging.”
Ahmed has openly shared his gratitude towards the medical practitioners who dedicated themselves to his care. He acknowledged their vital role in his recovery, stating, “I wouldn’t be here today without [their] skill and dedication.” His optimism shines through as he expresses hope for the future, crediting the Sheffield Children’s Hospital team for giving him a new lease on life.
