Throughout their remarkable career, the question of why they continue to perform often arises. Nick Rhodes asserted, “People often say to me now, ‘Well why on earth are you still doing this?’ And I smile and laugh and just say, ‘Why would I not want to do this?’ We all love being in Duran Duran.” This passion is evidently a driving force behind the band’s longevity and continued popularity.

The roots of Duran Duran can be traced back to Taylor and Rhodes, both 63 and lifelong friends who first met in Birmingham. Their chemistry is palpable, as Taylor describes their bond as “like brothers.” Together, they commenced their journey with the formation of the band in 1978, eventually welcoming lead singer Simon Le Bon and drummer Roger Taylor, who remain integral members today.

In 2023, the band released “Danse Macabre,” a Halloween-themed album, and took a methodical approach to their next project. Taylor explained the inception of “Free to Love,” recalling how they had several ideas and that one particular track had lingered on a hard drive for a while. “Nick said, ‘I think we should get that out and try and make something of it,'” Taylor recounted, illustrating the collaborative spirit within the band.

Rhodes shared his excitement regarding the new single, noting how it “really captured” his attention. He recalled the excitement during the writing sessions, saying, “I never let go of the one that has now become ‘Free to Love.'” The democratic nature of Duran Duran’s songwriting process allows each member to contribute fully. Taylor explained how they brainstorm ideas in a collaborative environment, ensuring everyone feels heard.

The presence of Nile Rodgers undoubtedly added a refreshing dimension to the creative process, with Taylor remarking that the band’s ability to remain open-minded has been key to their success. “Chemistry is finding harmony out of a clash of styles,” he noted, underscoring the importance of collaboration and mutual respect within the band.

Discussing the dynamics among the members, Rhodes emphasised the familial bonds that have formed over the years. “It’s like being one big family. When asked about the potential for new music, Taylor remarked, “We’ve been doing it for 40 years, and this is four new minutes of music, and this is going to have to do it for now.” Despite this, fans will soon have the chance to witness the band’s live performances, as Duran Duran is set to grace the stage at the BeachLife Festival in Redondo Beach, California, on May 1, followed by a four-date residency in Las Vegas.

Reflecting on their career, Taylor expressed gratitude for the experiences they have shared and the music they’ve created. “This is all f—ing cake at this point. We’ve had such an extraordinary career, really, and I just feel so incredibly fortunate that I’ve just been around so much great music,” he concluded, encapsulating the sentiments of a band that continues to thrive even after decades in the limelight.
