They maintained contact through letters during Slawter’s deployment to Vietnam; however, life took them down different paths and their correspondence eventually faded away. For Slawter, time and distance saw him move to Kentucky after his marriage and later to Florida, where he became a canoe and kayak tour guide on the Crooked River.
The reconnection was triggered by a post on social media. Slawter’s daughter, Josie Hagy, shared news of her father’s new residence in Rose Lane on Facebook. In a remarkable twist, Gibson’s daughter saw the post and followed up with a question, leading to the joyful revelation that both siblings were living in the same location.
