An Ohio man, Larry J. Drotleff, is now facing federal charges for allegedly misappropriating more than $246,000 in Social Security benefits and retirement funds from his late father. The charges come in the wake of new revelations concerning the suspicious circumstances surrounding the death of Drotleff’s father, Lawrence A. Drotleff.

The troubling case began decades ago in February 1998 when children discovered a suitcase containing dismembered remains in a wooded area in Dover Township, Tuscarawas County. Following this chilling find, investigators uncovered more remains in a second suitcase, which indicated that all the body parts belonged to the same individual. However, due to the absence of identifying features such as the head and hands, the identity of the victim remained a mystery for many years.

Recent advances in genetic genealogy testing have brought to light the identity of the deceased, confirming the remains as those of Lawrence A. Drotleff. In May 2023, when the case was reopened, investigators found that his son Larry, who is now 81 years old, was still alive and allegedly had been collecting the government benefits belonging to his deceased father.

According to court documents filed in the United States District Court for the Northern District of Ohio, the Tuscarawas County Sheriff’s Office announced on April 16 that investigators had learned of Larry’s actions regarding the misappropriation of funds. Allegations detail that Larry admitted to dismembering his father’s body using a manual hand saw after discovering his father dead upon returning home from work in 1998.
Further troubling details reveal that Larry placed portions of his father’s remains into suitcases, while the remainder of the body was disposed of in bags thrown into a dumpster. This brutal account has drawn the attention of both local authorities and federal prosecutors, who are now pursuing charges of theft of government property and embezzlement from an employee pension fund against him.
Federal prosecutors contend that Larry Drotleff unlawfully collected a total of $111,485 in Social Security benefits and $135,040 in pension funds following his father’s death. At this time, it remains unclear whether he has entered a plea concerning the federal charges.
The Tuscarawas County Sheriff’s Office has clarified the legal repercussions regarding the dismemberment and treatment of the corpse. Capt. Adam Fisher explained that the statute of limitations for potential charges related to the death itself has expired, which is why Larry has not been charged with abuse of a corpse. The authorities have acknowledged the shocking nature of the case, underscoring the depraved actions taken by a son against his father.
In a statement released by the sheriff’s office, it was noted, “While the case did not prove to be a murder, it should be noted that the inhumane treatment of the corpse was conduct so inexcusable that this case remained a priority for the Tuscarawas County Sheriff’s Office.” The officials expressed disbelief that greed could lead to such a devastating breach of respect and dignity for a deceased family member.
This disturbing episode raises complex questions about the morality and ethics involved in extreme cases of betrayal within families, highlighting a tragic intersection of law, human rights, and social responsibilities. The case continues to unfold, and the local community remains shaken by the revelations concerning both the circumstances of the father’s death and the alleged actions of his son.
As the story develops, it may serve as a stark reminder of the darker aspects of human behaviour, shedding light on profound issues surrounding familial bonds and the consequences of greed. Further updates are expected as the judicial process progresses, and more details about the alleged fraud and dismemberment are anticipated to surface.
