A Kentucky thoroughbred horse trainer, Mark Toothaker, has expressed profound gratitude for what he believes was a life-saving incident linked to an NFL game last December. The 59-year-old’s dramatic health scare was triggered whilst he was watching a New York Giants match featuring kicker Younghoe Koo, whose unfortunate missed field goal attempt took an unexpected turn in Toothaker’s life.

While relaxing in bed with his wife, Malory, Toothaker found himself laughing uncontrollably at a botched kick during a game against the New England Patriots. He appreciated the comedic aspect so much that he rewound the footage to watch it again. However, the laughter took a serious turn as he suddenly experienced a seizure, a moment Toothaker described as feeling “like I got electrocuted”.
Recognising the gravity of the situation, Malory, who is a nurse working with a brain-injury specialist, immediately called for an ambulance. “I’ve never felt anything like this in my life,” Toothaker recounted, indicating the severity of the incident.
Upon arrival at the hospital, medical professionals discovered a sizeable, benign tumour on the left side of Toothaker’s brain, comparable in size to a tennis ball. Fortunately, the tumour was successfully removed, and after a short recovery, he was allowed to return home without any subsequent complications.
Toothaker, who trains horses at Spendthrift Farm, reflected on the peculiar turn of events that led to his life being saved. He stated, “I could have had it on a plane, anywhere,” highlighting the potential dangers had his seizure occurred in another location, especially while driving. “I didn’t kill anybody. I didn’t run over a family in my Expedition running up and down the road. I guess that would’ve been the hardest thing for me to live with if somebody would’ve got hurt out of this.”
Despite the violent nature of his seizure, which he has no memory of, Toothaker finds solace in the fact that he was at home when it happened. He pondered the potentially catastrophic consequences of having suffered the seizure while engaging in routine activities, particularly driving.
As he prepares for the upcoming Kentucky Derby, where his horse, Further Ado, is set to compete, Toothaker’s experience reinforces his perspective on life and the unexpected ways in which fate can intervene. His brush with health calamity has prompted him to appreciate the smaller moments more deeply.
Younghoe Koo, the kicker at the centre of this bizarre turn of events, has faced his own ups and downs in the NFL since the incident. Though his missed kick drew laughter from onlookers, including Peyton and Eli Manning during their ManningCast coverage, he currently remains unsigned after the Giants waived him following the end of the season.
