Man, 33, Gored to Death at Running of the Bulls Festival After Sustaining Wounds to His Groin, Chest and Abdomen 

A tragic incident unfolded during the San Marcos Festival in Beas de Segura, southern Spain, on Friday, April 24, resulting in the death of a young cattle rancher due to a bull-related accident. Santiago Barrero San Román, aged 33, was gored multiple times by the bull during the festivities, which take place annually in this historic town.

Reports indicate that the tragic events occurred around 7:00 p.m. local time. San Román sustained serious injuries, including wounds to his groin, chest, and abdomen, after the bull charged at him. Emergency services quickly transported him to a nearby first-aid station, but sadly, he succumbed to his injuries shortly after, around 8:00 p.m., while efforts were being made to transfer him to the hospital.

The San Marcos Festival, which has roots dating back to the 16th century, features an array of traditional festivities, including the running of the bulls. However, on this occasion, the joyful celebrations turned somber. The festival organisers expressed their deep regret over the incident in a statement released by Beas de Segura Town Hall, confirming the death of one participant.

In light of the tragedy, the organisers resolved not to cancel the remaining festivities but stated that a minute of silence would be held to honour San Román’s memory. This moment of respect was paired with a trumpet blast, in line with festival regulations. San Román was not only known for his role as a rancher but was also a prominent figure in the local bull-breeding community. Along with his wife, Vanesa, he founded the Toros de San Román brand, continuing a family legacy rooted in cattle breeding. His grandfather, Antonio San Román, was also involved in the profession, which further emphasises the impact of this loss on the community.

The Association of Fighting Bull Breeders shared their condolences via social media, expressing their sorrow over San Román’s untimely passing. The association highlighted the profound connection within the bull-breeding community and offered thoughts of comfort to his family and friends during this difficult time.
