In a heart-wrenching incident in Magione, Italy, twin brothers Francesco and Giacomo Fierloni tragically lost their lives after being electrocuted while attempting to retrieve a bird from power lines. This devastating event transpired late on the evening of Tuesday, April 21, as the brothers were involved in training their pigeon retrievers for the hunting season.

According to reports from local media outlets, the twins, aged 22, encountered a situation when one of their trained birds fell onto a 10-metre-high medium-voltage power line. In a desperate bid to reclaim the bird, one brother attempted to use a carbon-fibre pole. However, he inadvertently came into contact with the live wires, delivering a lethal shock of 20,000 volts. When the second brother rushed to his sibling’s aid, he too was fatally electrocuted.
Emergency services faced significant challenges in accessing the secluded wooded area where the incident unfolded. By the time first responders reached the scene, they found the brothers unresponsive. Despite efforts to administer CPR, it was unfortunately too late to save them.
The twins were later discovered by their father, brother, and uncle, who found them lying together at the site of the tragedy. The community of Magione has been deeply affected by the loss of the young men, described as “golden boys” by Mayor Massimo Lagetti in his heartfelt statement.
In his message shared on social media, Lagetti reflected on the impact the brothers had on those around them. “A tragic event has struck our community,” he wrote. “Francesco and Giacomo were wonderful individuals, both professionally and personally. Their loss is immensely difficult for their family and our entire community to bear.”
The mayor extended his condolences to the brothers’ family, including their mother, Roberta, and father, Giorgio, emphasising the profound grief experienced by those who knew them. He also noted that local officials, including Prefect Dr. Zito and Regional President Dr. Proietti, reached out to express their sympathies.
In the wake of this tragedy, a funeral was held on Friday, April 24, at the Church of San Giovanni Battista in Magione. The community gathered to pay their respects and mourn the untimely loss of the twins, who had so much ahead of them.
Authorities, including Carabinieri officials, are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident. The devastating consequences of this accident serve as a stark reminder of the inherent dangers associated with electrical installations, particularly in rural areas.
In the midst of profound sorrow, many in Magione are coming together to honour the memories of Francesco and Giacomo. As the investigation continues, thoughts and prayers remain with their family and friends during this incredibly challenging time.
The incident highlights the importance of safety precautions when engaging in outdoor activities, particularly when they involve electrical hazards. As the community reflects on the tragedy, many hope that lessons learned will help prevent future occurrences.
This heartbreaking event marks a significant loss not only for the Fierloni family but for the entire community of Magione, which will undoubtedly feel the absence of the twins for years to come.
