**Donnie Wahlberg Discusses Challenges of Filming ‘Boston Blue’ in His Hometown**

Donnie Wahlberg has shared insights into the difficulties of filming his new series, “Boston Blue,” in his native Boston. The actor, who is best known for his role as Danny Reagan in “Blue Bloods,” recently opened up about the production logistics during a guest appearance on “Radio Andy.” He revealed that while the show occasionally shoots scenes in Boston, it simply does not possess the budget to film the entire series there.

Wahlberg, reflecting on his passion for representing Boston, stated that he even offered to halve his pay to facilitate filming in his hometown. Despite his willingness, he acknowledged that the network was unable to make it happen. “I said, ‘Listen, I’ll give back 50% of my paycheck if we can go to Boston,’” he recounted. However, the response he received was disheartening: “You can give back 100% and so can the rest of the cast, we cannot film this show in Boston.”

While segments of “Boston Blue” are indeed filmed in the Massachusetts capital, the majority of production takes place in Toronto, Canada, due to the significantly lower costs associated with shooting there. Wahlberg explained the financial constraints that prevent the show from being based in Boston full-time, stating that it is “just so expensive” to set up production in his hometown.

Further complicating matters, Wahlberg noted the overwhelming fan presence when filming in Boston. He described how the iconic duck boat tours pass by his shooting locations, often creating distractions as tour guides announce his presence. “Literally, the duck boats are going by, and the tour guides have on these headsets with speakers,” he explained. This results in interruptions during filming as fans call out to him, seeking photographs and autographs. “I’ve got to run over to the duck boat and pose for pictures with everyone,” he laughed, noting that the constant attention makes it challenging to focus on shooting.

The actor also addressed how every take becomes a spectacle. Wahlberg described the hilarity of trying to portray serious scenes while dealing with enthusiastic fans and their remarks. “I literally say, ‘Give me your hand, sir, you’re under arrest,’ and it’s like, ‘Donnie! Donnie!’” said Wahlberg, showcasing the chaotic environment that filming in Boston can create.

From 2010 to 2024, Wahlberg starred as Danny Reagan for 14 seasons of “Blue Bloods,” which is set in New York City. In the new spinoff, “Boston Blue,” his character takes on a new role within the Boston Police Department, aiming to strengthen his relationship with his son, who also serves as a police officer. The cast includes Sonequa Martin-Green, Maggie Lawson, and Ernie Hudson.

Wahlberg recently celebrated the show’s success after it was renewed for a second season. During the iHeartRadio Music Awards, he expressed his joy at being able to share the good news with his cast members. “I had the pleasure of calling all my castmates and telling them,” he shared. “Every single one of them had tears in their eyes, and so did I.”
