The news was revealed by owner Gates Rodenfels, who made a heartfelt announcement on social media and posted a handwritten message at the door of the Naples location, thanking the community for their years of support.

In his Facebook post on April 21, Rodenfels expressed his gratitude, saying, “Thank you Naples for 38 ½ years of great memories. We are permanently closed. Love – the Skyline Crew.” This announcement follows a long tenure in the area, where these restaurants had become local favourites known for their distinctive chili-topped spaghetti and hot dogs, a unique offering that differentiates Skyline from other dining options.
A spokesperson for Skyline Chili confirmed the closure to PEOPLE, explaining that Rodenfels has chosen to retire, leading to the cessation of operations in both Fort Myers and Naples. “After decades of dedicated service, our longtime Southwest Florida franchisee has decided to retire,” the spokesperson noted, adding that there is ongoing effort to find new franchise candidates to keep the brand alive in the region.
The emotional toll of the closures was evident in the flood of reactions from the community on Rodenfels’ post. Fans expressed their sorrow and shared fond memories of their experiences at the restaurant. One former employee lamented, “Nooooo…I still have dreams of skyline chili. One of the best places I have ever worked at,” highlighting the strong emotional connection many had with the establishment.

Skyline Chili opened its first Florida location several decades ago but has now streamlined its presence down to just four outlets across the state, contrasting with the majority of its establishments which remain in the Midwest, predominantly in Cincinnati. Rodenfels had initially operated the franchise under the business name S.W. Florida Chili, Inc. since 1988, reflecting years of dedication to bringing the Skyline experience to Florida.
The Naples outlet originally began its journey in a shopping mall, before relocating to a retail strip which is now reportedly set to become a luxury car dealership. Although the change in ownership of the retail centre happened five years ago, sources indicate this was not a direct cause for the closure, as Rodenfels had expressed intentions to find a new home for his franchise but unfortunately was unable to do so.
Skyline Chili is recognised for its unique offerings, particularly the “3-Way” dish featuring chilli served over spaghetti, alongside their famous Coneys. The meals are typically accompanied by oyster crackers and hot sauce, creating a distinctive dining experience that has attracted loyal customers.
The brand, established in Cincinnati in 1949, continues to make strides in creative culinary offerings, including the recent collaboration with Graeter’s to produce a sweet-and-spicy ice cream flavour called Skyline Spice. This innovative dessert, launched in early 2025, incorporated the chain’s signature chilli blend and oyster crackers, showcasing the versatility of Skyline’s flavours in a new format.
As Skyline Chili transitions away from its Southwest Florida presence, the closure of Rodenfels’ restaurants marks the end of an era for many local devotees.
