Jada Pinkett Smith has initiated a legal motion in California, seeking to recover over £49,000 (approximately $49,181.23) in attorney fees following the successful dismissal of parts of a lawsuit filed against her by Bilaal Salaam. The suit, which was registered in December 2025, accused Pinkett Smith of intentional infliction of emotional distress, with Salaam claiming damages of $3 million.

The recent motion, submitted on 20 April, outlines that the fees in question were incurred during Pinkett Smith’s efforts to have Salaam’s allegations dismissed. In her filing, she argues that Salaam’s claims directly contravened California’s anti-SLAPP statute. The Anti-SLAPP (strategic lawsuit against public participation) Act is designed to protect individuals from lawsuits that aim to silence free speech or public participation.
Earlier this year, in February, Pinkett Smith sought to have Salaam’s complaint thrown out entirely, contending it was meritless. Her filings indicated that part of Salaam’s case stemmed from a cease-and-desist letter issued by the Smiths, which Salaam publicly disclosed. Pinkett Smith’s team characterised this letter as confidential legal correspondence, emphasising that it should be viewed as pre-litigation activity and therefore protected under state law.

The origins of Salaam’s lawsuit date back to September 2021, when he alleged that Pinkett Smith confronted him in a public space and issued threats regarding his purported revelations about her personal life. In interviews, Salaam claimed to have witnessed Will Smith engaged in a sexual act with actor Duane Martin, a statement that Pinkett Smith has vehemently denied. Pinkett Smith, in her defence, has dismissed these allegations as “nonsense” during a 2023 interview and stressed that legal action would be pursued in response.
Salaam’s lawsuit accused Pinkett Smith of damaging his character through public statements, asserting that her reactions were intentionally malicious. The legal documents stated that instead of seeking recourse through appropriate channels, she engaged in a character smear through interviews broadcast nationally.
Following the court’s decision in Pinkett Smith’s favour, her legal representatives are now arguing that the dismissal of Salaam’s claims warrants a full reimbursement of her attorney’s fees. The motion highlights the importance of guarding against frivolous lawsuits that misuse the judicial system to inflict emotional distress on individuals.
