Video Shows Hikers Climbing Running for Safety After Volcano Erupts During Climb of ‘the Death Trail’

On April 20, a dramatic scene unfolded at Santiaguito volcano in Guatemala as hikers made a hasty retreat from the site of an unexpected eruption. Residents and tourists alike were startled by the sudden eruption of one of Latin America’s most perilous volcanoes, which is notorious for its frequent activity and the dangers it poses.

Footage of the incident, captured by local resident Carlos Enrique Porres Rodas, shows a group of hikers fleeing as debris and ash rained down around them. The hikers, initially journeying upwards toward the smoking summit, quickly realised the escalating danger and fled down the infamous El Paso de la Muerte, or the Death Trail. The alarming scenes reflect both the excitement and risks associated with venturing too close to an active volcano.

Santiaguito volcano, situated in the western part of Guatemala, is classified as one of the region’s most active volcanoes, with daily eruptions that can vary in intensity. As officials continuously monitor the volcanic activity, they stress the significance of adhering to safety guidelines and restrictions placed around the area. Presently, there is a designated restricted zone of approximately 5 kilometres (5.3 miles) surrounding the volcanic complex, where access, lingering, and camping are strictly forbidden.

After the eruption, local disaster response agency, the National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction (CONRED), released a bulletin detailing the volcanic activity. The report indicated that manifestations of lava extrusion were spotted, and avalanches were occurring on the Caliente dome, accompanied by short-range pyroclastic flows. This reinforces the severe threat posed by the volcano, even to those who dare to approach its summit.

Rodas, who recorded the unfolding events, highlighted the allure that Santiaguito holds for adventurers despite its dangerous reputation. He noted that despite restrictions, many tourists still attempt to ascend the volcano, often underestimating the associated risks. “It’s a breathtaking sight, but the risks cannot be ignored,” he remarked, emphasising the need for caution.

Fortunately, initial reports indicate that there were no serious injuries resulting from this recent eruption. However, the danger remains as the volcano continues to exhibit signs of heightened activity. Observers noted visible incandescence in the crater during the night and early hours, confirming that the complex remains in a state of volatility.

In light of this incident, officials are reiterating their warnings and urging the public to respect the established safety zones that have been put in place for their protection. The Executive Secretariat of CONRED reiterated the necessity of maintaining safe distances from the volcano, highlighting that entering the restricted zones endangers not only those who attempt to do so but also the emergency response teams who would be called upon in the event of an accident.
