A California family is mourning the tragic loss of 13-year-old Angel Roman Mendoza Lopez, who was fatally injured while riding his electric scooter in Pomona. The incident occurred on Friday, 17th April, shortly after Angel had returned home from a school field trip, intending to visit a friend in his neighbourhood.

Angel’s cousin, Karen Torres, shared the last interaction the young boy had with his mother, stating that Angel called out, “Mommy, I got home from my field trip,” followed by an affectionate “I love you.” Torres described Angel as a good-natured child with “a golden heart,” emphasising the profound impact his untimely death has had on the family.
According to the Pomona Police Department, the fatal incident took place around 2:29 p.m. on S. San Antonio Avenue. Investigators reported that Angel was riding his scooter on the roadway when he exited a pavement just as a vehicle was also travelling southbound on the same road. The resulting collision left Angel with severe injuries.
Following the incident, emergency responders from the Pomona Police and the Los Angeles County Fire Department arrived to administer aid at the scene. Unfortunately, despite their efforts, Angel succumbed to his injuries two days later, on Sunday, 19th April.
Family members have noted that Angel was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident, which his cousin remarked was particularly tragic since it was a safeguard he often used. Torres added that the young boy was once a member of the cadet academy, aspiring to become a police officer and expressing a deep passion for soccer.
Local authorities have indicated that the speed limit in the area where the incident took place was 25 mph, yet it remains uncertain whether the driver was exceeding this limit or distracted at the time of the crash. The driver reportedly remained at the scene and has been cooperative with the police investigation, which is currently ongoing. Investigators are working to determine whether impaired driving or other factors may have contributed to the incident.
In the wake of Angel’s death, Torres has established a GoFundMe campaign to assist the grieving family during this challenging time. The memorial describes Angel as “truly one of a kind,” recalling his unwavering faith and the joy he brought into the lives of those around him. His family members remember him as a devoted child, one who demonstrated extraordinary kindness and a gentle spirit, earning the love and affection of many.
Expressing the family’s heartbreak, Torres stated, “Our entire family is reeling from this profound and sudden loss, and we are struggling to come to terms with a future without his bright spirit among us.” She indicated that they are holding onto the belief that Angel has found peace and comfort in heaven, finding solace in the hope of one day being reunited with him.
