Esther Lively, a 31-year-old mother from the UK, found herself facing an unimaginable challenge in December when, during her third trimester, she was diagnosed with stage 3 triple-negative breast cancer. The discovery came after she noticed a lump during a routine self-examination, initially dismissing it as a normal part of her pregnancy. However, the situation escalated as she started to experience sharp sensations in her breast, prompting her to seek medical advice.
The news was a shock to Lively and her husband, Matthew, 34, who were eagerly anticipating the arrival of their first child after two years of infertility and conception via in vitro fertilisation (IVF). The couple had their hearts set on welcoming their daughter, Eloise, into the world, but the cancer diagnosis abruptly altered their plans. “I was Googling and asking everyone I could, including turning to ChatGPT to inquire, ‘Is this safe? Can you undergo chemotherapy during pregnancy?’” recalled Lively.

Research reassured her that chemotherapy could be administered during the later stages of pregnancy, but she had to carefully consider its timing in relation to her birth plan. “I wanted to begin treatment as soon as possible after the birth, so I was determined to avoid complications that might delay my chemotherapy,” she explained. This desire influenced her choices during labour, as she opted for an induction without an epidural, resulting in a delivery that she described as ideal.
On March 22, Lively gave birth to Eloise, a moment she deemed “a little unreal.” Overwhelmed with joy, she expressed her gratitude: “After all we went through with IVF and the cancer, I can hardly believe she is finally here.” The bond with her newborn has provided a source of strength as she navigates the complexities of being a mother while undergoing cancer treatment.
Since Eloise’s arrival, Lively has continued her chemotherapy regimen, which requires her to take precautions to limit her daughter’s exposure to chemotherapy drugs. “I have to wash my hands meticulously and avoid holding her when I’m sweaty or clammy,” she detailed. Adjusting to motherhood has brought about unexpected changes; Lively chose not to breastfeed immediately to conserve her energy for treatment. “My focus needed to be on resting. Plus, not breastfeeding has allowed others to bond with her too,” she shared, highlighting the support from her family.
Interestingly, her cancer journey has catalysed a reconnection with her family. Her mother moved in to help care for Eloise, a change Lively had long desired. The support extended beyond immediate family, with in-laws also stepping in post-birth. She remarked, “Cancer brought my family closer in ways I never anticipated.” This collective support, alongside a reinvigorated Christian faith, has strengthened her resolve, providing her with a sense of peace amidst turmoil. “I remind myself to choose joy, regardless of the ups and downs,” Lively added.
Facing the prospect of a double mastectomy, Lively has found solace in reflecting on her life choices and overall health. “I wasn’t prioritising my well-being before. I was barely sleeping, neglecting time with Matthew, and skipping church,” she explained. Her diagnosis has prompted a significant lifestyle overhaul; she now focuses on nutrition, exercise, and getting quality sleep. “I’m doing this not just for myself but for Eloise. I want to be there for her as she grows up,” Lively stated.
As she confronts the hurdles that lie ahead, her positive mindset remains resolute. “I acknowledge the tough moments but allow myself to experience them briefly. Then, I regroup and focus on gratitude,” she noted. Notably, she finds comfort in knowing that triple-negative breast cancer is one of the most researched types, increasing her hope for an effective treatment path.
Esther Lively’s journey through pregnancy and cancer has been a testament to resilience and faith. In spite of the challenges, she remains anchored in gratitude, believing that the arrival of her daughter is intertwined with her prayers and hopes. “When Eloise was born, it felt like everything I had prayed for came to fruition,” she concluded, embodying an inspiring spirit of perseverance amid adversity.
