**Growing Concerns Over Human Exposure to Marburg Virus in Uganda’s Python Cave**

Scientists are raising alarms regarding the serious risks of human exposure to the Marburg virus, which is known for its alarming 90% mortality rate. Python Cave, nestled within Uganda’s Queen Elizabeth National Park, has been recorded as a hotspot for Egyptian fruit bats that carry this deadly virus. Recent research has indicated a troubling increase in the number of visitors, including children, who are entering the area without proper protective measures.

In a study published in the journal *Current Biology*, researchers documented unprecedented levels of human visitation to the cave. They employed camera traps to monitor both the bats and their predators, capturing images of 214 individuals, including school children, tourists, and researchers, during 22 events. Alarmingly, only one person was observed wearing a mask, while many others ventured dangerously close to the cave entrance, thereby ignoring park regulations and bypassing designated viewing platforms situated around 30 metres away.
The Marburg virus symptoms mirror those of Ebola, causing fever, headaches, rashes, and vomiting. In more severe cases, the illness can evolve into haemorrhagic symptoms, leading to profuse bleeding from various bodily orifices, which is the origin of its nickname, the “Bleeding Eye” virus. As noted by Cleveland Clinic, there is currently no known cure or effective treatment, resulting in a death rate of up to 90% during outbreaks.
The study’s lead author, Alexander Braczkowski, who serves as the scientific director at the Kyambura Lion Project, commented on the grave implications of human activity in the area. The researchers initially set up the camera traps to observe not only the bats but also their interactions with a variety of wildlife. Of particular concern was the presence of multiple predators entering the cave in search of food. This dynamic raises the possibility of the virus transmitting from bats to other species, further complicating the public health crisis.
The researchers noted that interactions captured by the cameras involved not only wildlife but also countless visitors who displayed blatant disregard for essential safety measures. This situation is exacerbated during critical periods such as the bat birthing season, when the potential for viral shedding is heightened.
While there have not been any confirmed cases of Marburg transmission related to the recent human activity in the cave, historical data suggests otherwise. In 2008, a Dutch tourist succumbed to the virus after visiting, and another visitor from Colorado was later diagnosed with it. This individual accounted a potential exposure scenario in which she came into contact with guano-laden rocks during her visit, suggesting that even indirect contact with infected materials can lead to the disease manifesting.
In light of these alarming findings, the scientists involved in the study have communicated their concerns to the Uganda Wildlife Authority. They are advocating for the implementation of stricter regulations to mitigate the risk of Marburg virus transmission. Recommendations include the mandatory use of protective gear, enforced social distancing from the cave, and the involvement of locally trained guides who can educate visitors and monitor potential biosafety risks.
Public health experts warn that without immediate interventions, the increasing proximity of humans to a reservoir of the Marburg virus poses a significant threat not only to local populations but potentially to global health. As visitors flock to Python Cave, the need for awareness, protection, and regulation becomes ever more pressing to avert future outbreaks of this lethal virus.
The scientific community continues to emphasise the importance of understanding zoonotic diseases, especially in regions where wildlife and human activities intersect. As monitoring efforts unfold in Uganda, the situation at Python Cave serves as a critical reminder of the precarious balance between human curiosity and the risks that nature may pose.
