Amazon has officially unveiled its latest initiative, the GLP-1 weight loss programme, which is designed to provide patients with personalised care options delivered straight to their door. Announced on April 21, the Amazon One Medical GLP-1 Management Programme seeks to offer both oral and injectable medications, effectively integrating these treatments into a comprehensive health management strategy.

The newly launched programme aims to address a common issue faced by many patients: fragmented healthcare. According to Amazon, individuals frequently encounter disjointed weight management solutions from various healthcare providers, often lacking overarching insight into their medical histories and medication costs. By merging GLP-1 treatment with broader health concerns, Amazon intends to enhance focus on how weight management relates to cardiovascular health and metabolic conditions, fostering a holistic approach to patient care.

The programme facilitates same-day delivery of medications to nearly 3,000 cities across the UK, with plans to expand this coverage to approximately 4,500 cities by year’s end. Patients enrolled in the programme will have access to a range of services, including screenings, consultations, and follow-up appointments, thereby ensuring sustained support throughout their weight loss journey.
Medications available through the programme are sourced from Amazon Pharmacy. Patients can opt for either oral medications, such as Wegovy and Foundayo, which start at £25 per month with insurance coverage, or injectable options like the Zepbound auto-injector and KwikPen, available from £299 per month without insurance. For those already holding prescriptions for GLP-1 medications, Amazon provides the facility to renew them on-demand, simplifying the ongoing management of their treatment.
Most notably, Amazon is prioritising clear communication and transparency regarding medication costs. Tanvi Patel, Vice President and General Manager of Amazon Pharmacy, emphasised the company’s commitment to eliminating confusion surrounding pricing. “Providing customers with fast, convenient medication access and clear, transparent pricing is integral to how Amazon Pharmacy is transforming the pharmacy experience,” Patel remarked.
Following the launch of its GLP-1 programme, Amazon finds itself in direct competition with Walmart, which recently introduced its own platform focused on GLP-1 medications. Walmart’s Better Care Services now connects patients with virtual healthcare providers for weight management solutions tailored for those on GLP-1 drugs or considering such treatments. This emerging competition in the marketplace may enhance access to essential medication for many patients struggling with weight management.
As Amazon expands its ecosystem of healthcare offerings, the emphasis on technologically integrated services is increasingly apparent. The GLP-1 Management Programme not only involves prescriptions but also places significant weight on the continuity of care, ensuring that patients remain engaged with their health management throughout the process.
With the GLP-1 weight loss programme, Amazon aims to redefine the patient experience, ensuring that access to necessary treatments is not just fast but consistent and reliable. By providing patients with personalised care that considers the full scope of their health, Amazon is positioning itself as a formidable player in the healthcare market, with its sights firmly set on creating lasting impacts on patient wellbeing.
