Missing 6-Year-Old Boy Found Safe by Man Who Has Been Homeless Since Prison Release

In a concerning incident that unfolded in Miami, a homeless man played a pivotal role in the safe recovery of a six-year-old boy who was found wandering alone late at night. The troubling events transpired just before midnight on 8 April when Arnett Johnson, having spent the past six months sleeping on a bench in Allapattah following a stint in prison, spotted the child near Northwest Seventh Avenue and 17th Street.

Initially perplexed by the sight of a young boy alone at such a late hour, Johnson sought to find the child’s parents but found no one in sight. “I’m looking around for a parent, but I looked and I don’t see nobody,” Johnson recounted. He noted his immediate concern for the child’s safety and, believing the situation required urgent attention, he contacted the police and stayed with the boy until officers arrived.

“God sent me there. I had to do what God says to do,” Johnson asserted, emphasizing his feeling of responsibility towards ensuring the boy was protected. Miami police officer Mike Vega praised Johnson as a “good Samaritan” and remarked on the potential dangers the child faced had he remained on the streets. “We don’t know what would have happened if he would have remained on the street,” Vega stated, acknowledging the risks prevalent in the area.

Following the boy’s recovery, police interviewed him to understand the circumstances of his situation. During this interaction, the child reportedly stated, “Mommy drop me off and left me.” Officer Vega raised concerns regarding the child’s welfare, noting indications that the boy might have developmental challenges that made his wandering particularly alarming.

Investigators were able to trace the child’s family after his school recognised him from a flyer that had been distributed. They learned that the boy’s mother, Annie Rivera, 30, had recently moved into a home shared with another family. Allegedly, Rivera informed police that her son was in bed when she left for work on Wednesday. Upon returning, she had not checked on him.

Witnesses stated that at one point, a child asked Rivera about the whereabouts of her son. According to an arrest report, she responded that she was unsure and speculated that he might be at his godmother’s house. This response raised further concerns about her attentiveness to the child’s wellbeing.

On the following day, police brought Rivera into custody after informing her of her son’s discovery. She made her first appearance before Judge Mindy S. Glazer at the Miami-Dade Circuit Court, facing charges of child neglect. In a heartbreaking scene, Rivera was visibly emotional during the court proceedings.

The judge ruled that Rivera could only have supervised contact with her son, who has since been placed in the care of the Florida Department of Children and Families. Rivera was given a pretrial service order and a bond of £2,500 was set. Additionally, she is required to attend a dependency hearing to investigate how her son ended up wandering the streets alone.

As the investigation continues, Rivera has reportedly posted bond. The case not only highlights the critical role of individuals like Johnson in protecting vulnerable members of the community but also raises significant questions about child welfare and parental responsibilities in Miami.
