Bob Odenkirk, a prominent actor best known for his role in the acclaimed series ‘Better Call Saul,’ has firmly stated that he has no intention of stepping away from action films despite a serious health scare in recent years. The 63-year-old artist, who suffered a widowmaker heart attack while on set in 2021, discussed his ongoing passion for action roles during the LA premiere of his latest film, ‘Normal,’ which debuted in cinemas on 17 April.

Odenkirk’s health has substantially improved since his near-fatal experience. He confidently expressed to PEOPLE that he has been actively engaged in stunt training twice a week under the guidance of his trainer, Daniel Bernhardt. This dedication to fitness not only allows him to maintain his physical condition but simultaneously fuels his enthusiasm for action-oriented projects.

Reflecting on his harrowing heart attack, the actor recalled collapsing on the set in New Mexico during the final season of ‘Better Call Saul.’ Following his collapse, the crew quickly came to his aid, calling for medical assistance. It took several shocks from an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) to restore his heartbeat, after which he was transported to a hospital. Awaking from a medically induced coma, Odenkirk learned he had experienced a widowmaker heart attack—a condition characterised by a blockage in the left anterior descending artery.

Despite the frightening ordeal, Odenkirk has chosen to embrace his love for action-packed films rather than retreating from them. “Oh, it’s good. It’s good,” he stated enthusiastically about his current health status. The actor recognises the importance of staying active and has devised a training routine that keeps him fit for the physical demands of his roles. He emphasised that halting his training could lead to a daunting transition back into intense physicality, which he prefers to avoid.
The actor’s decision to continue his involvement in action films is greatly motivated by his belief that regular training helps mitigate the risks associated with his health history. “If I keep up the basics, then it’s not so scary to just amp it up in time for a movie,” he explained, expressing his commitment to staying engaged in his craft.
Odenkirk recently wrapped filming on the sequel to ‘Nobody,’ aptly titled ‘Nobody 2,’ which he believes aided in preparing him for the role of a small-town sheriff in ‘Normal.’ He indicated that the momentum from the previous production kept him in shape physically, easing the transition into his newest project.
‘Normal,’ which Odenkirk stars in, follows the story of a sheriff who becomes embroiled in a complex investigation surrounding dark secrets in his seemingly tranquil community. The film is being distributed by Magnolia Pictures, which has previously backed numerous successful independent titles. The actor’s performance in this latest role continues to showcase his versatility and passion for dynamic storytelling.
The release of ‘Normal’ has been met with anticipation, and Odenkirk’s return to the action genre offers fans a chance to see him in a role that resonates with his established strengths. The actor’s resilience in the face of adversity and dedication to his health and career serves as an inspiration to many within the industry and beyond.
As Odenkirk enjoys his newfound health and success, he remains focused on the future and continues to embrace action films as a significant aspect of his career. With a commitment to rigorous training and a positive outlook on his health, it seems the veteran actor is just getting started.
