Woman Found Dead Weeks After Throwing Phone in a Bush and Disappearing: ‘She Is Now at Peace,’ Brother Says

Authorities confirmed on Monday, April 13, that a body recovered from the Long Island Sound has been identified as that of 32-year-old Brittany Kritis-Garip from Oyster Bay, New York. Kritis-Garip had been missing since March 20, when she was last seen on foot in her local area.

The Suffolk County Police Department reported that they responded to a 911 call regarding a body in the water off Lloyd Harbor Road. Although preliminary investigations suggest that her death is non-criminal, a definitive cause of death will be established by the medical examiner.

Prior to her disappearance, Kritis-Garip’s husband, Fernando Garip, described a troubling sequence of events. He recounted that Brittany had jumped out of a moving vehicle, discarded her mobile phone into a bush and then fled in a distressed state. Fernando expressed the urgency of their efforts to locate her, stating that they were committed to searching various terrains until she was found. “We’ve been combing wooded areas, rural areas, suburban areas, everything,” he said.

Brittany’s brother, Niko Kritis-Garip, took to social media to share the devastating news of her passing within a Facebook group dedicated to updates on her case. He penned a heartfelt tribute, expressing, “With heavy hearts, we share that Brittany has been found and has passed… We take comfort in knowing that God has called her into His care, and that she is now at peace.”
