A commendable act of bravery by a gas station clerk has received widespread attention following a disturbing incident in Hamtramck, Michigan, where a 16-year-old girl was allegedly abducted on her way to school. The girl’s ordeal began on 13 April, when she was taken, prompting a rapid response from local law enforcement.

During a press conference, Hamtramck Police Chief Hussein Farhat provided details about the incident, noting that police received reports of a possible kidnapping that morning. Authorities acted quickly, apprehending the suspect identified as 48-year-old Donald J. Fields, whose arrest occurred shortly after the abduction took place.
The situation unravelled approximately 30 minutes later when the suspect brought the girl into a Sunoco gas station located at the junction of Nevada Street and Conant Avenue in Detroit. Here, Abdulrahman Abohatem, the gas station clerk, noticed something was amiss. He recounted the moment he recognised the girl’s silent plea for help: “When [the suspect] asked her to pay for the cigarettes, I stopped and thought, there’s something wrong. And she mouthed, talked to me, like with no sound, ‘Help,’” he told local news outlet WXYZ.
In a decisive move, Abohatem confronted the suspect and forcefully expelled him from the store, subsequently aiding the teenager to safety just as the police arrived on the scene. “I saw the police outside. I pointed to him. I said, ‘That’s the guy,’” recalled Abohatem. His quick thinking undoubtedly played a vital role in the girl’s safe recovery.
Further information indicates that students from Frontier International Academy in Detroit, where the girl is enrolled, witnessed the abduction. These peers took it upon themselves to track her situation. They maintained contact through mobile phones and social media until help arrived, showcasing a commendable level of community vigilance.
Chief Farhat confirmed that a firearm was recovered from the scene during the incident, further complicating the charges against Fields. By 16 April, prosecutors in Wayne County had filed serious charges against him, including first-degree criminal sexual conduct, kidnapping, possession of a firearm, and felonious assault. He has since been remanded to Wayne County Jail without bond.
The school where the girl is a student issued a statement through social media, expressing relief that she had been safely recovered and reunited with her family. They acknowledged the quick actions of law enforcement and assured that they are fully cooperating with the investigation. Although the incident did not take place on school grounds or during times of school supervision, the institution reiterated its commitment to the safety and well-being of its students.

Hamtramck Mayor Adam Alharbi also voiced his appreciation for the community’s engagement during the crisis, particularly commending the bravery displayed by Abohatem and the vigilance demonstrated by the students. “I feel good when you save somebody. A sixteen-year-old — she is a child,” Abohatem expressed, reflecting on the emotional weight of his actions.
