A newlywed couple’s dream honeymoon in Japan has abruptly transformed into a fight for the bride’s survival after she suffered a severe health crisis just two days into their trip. Sarah Danh, 27, fell critically ill with acute liver failure, prompting an urgent hospitalisation in Tokyo while her husband, Luke Gradl, 28, takes on the challenge of managing mounting medical expenses and seeking assistance from the community.

The couple, who tied the knot on March 21 in Spring Branch, Texas, had meticulously planned their wedding, which Gradl described as Danh’s “dream wedding”, a vision she had worked tirelessly to bring to life for over a year. Following their wedding, the couple set off for Japan, looking to celebrate their recent marriage; however, the joy soon turned to dread.
On April 8, upon arrival at their hotel, Danh was not feeling well, but Gradl decided it was best to rest that day. With 16 days planned in the country, they felt they could afford to take it easy. Unfortunately, by the next evening, Danh’s condition had deteriorated significantly, prompting Gradl to rush her to a local emergency department just before midnight. “The honeymoon took a turn for the worse,” he recounted.
Once admitted, Danh’s condition worsened rapidly, leading to her transfer to the intensive care unit (ICU) the following day due to what was described as a “life-threatening health decline.” Doctors diagnosed her with acute liver failure, and her symptoms included jaundice, vomiting, fever, and severe hepatic encephalopathy, a serious brain dysfunction resulting from liver disease, according to experts at the Mayo Clinic.
Gradl expressed deep concern for his wife’s health, noting that prior to the honeymoon, there were no signs of illness at their wedding. “There were no health signs at our wedding,” he said, emphasising the shock of the sudden turn of events. Danh, who has been a dedicated labour and delivery nurse in San Antonio for just over a year, is now the one requiring urgent medical care.
As she battles this critical condition in a foreign hospital, her situation is compounded by additional complications, including kidney failure and intracranial pressure. Gradl mentioned that Danh is on continuous renal replacement therapy, including dialysis and blood transfusions, which adds to the urgency and complexity of her treatment.
Despite feeling isolated in a foreign country, Gradl remains focused on bringing Danh back home. However, in order to discharge her from the hospital, her family must cover the full extent of her medical bills. To assist with these unforeseen costs, they have set up a GoFundMe campaign to alleviate the financial burden while ensuring Danh’s safe return to the United States.
Gradl has asked for prayers and support from the wider community, saying, “With her story I just want as many people to be aware and provide prayer.” He expressed his love for Danh, stating, “I love my wife with all of my heart, and this is a test like no other.” He emphasised the importance of their faith in God and the medical staff as they navigate this challenging ordeal.
As the couple strives to find hope in a dire situation, the rapid progression of Danh’s health has raised concerns among her family and friends.
